But still, why should people who have perfectly functional sets now have to suck up the costs imposed by a change made by the gov't to free up those freqs to be sold off?

Exactly, I'm with ya. If it is being forced down our throats by the government, then the government should rectify this situation by passing ou the convertor boxes. On a side note, I think our country (you're from Canada as you stated) is becoming more corrupt when I see things like radio frequencies and the like being put up to the highest bidder. I really don't consider myself a Republican anymore althoug certainly not a Democrat either. I'm tired of both parties. I think it is pretty true the Republicans are the for the rich and powerful, although to be fair, the Democrats have their own rich and powerful movers and shakers too so actually it is a two way street but the Democrats have the added millstone where the social leftist "barking moonbats" are driving the agenda. I'm just some poor, working class to lower middle class, "Pittsburgh Hunky" trying to make it in the world. In short, I'm politically homeless. I'm very conservative socially, morally and militarily, but more centrist on economics. I guess if I had to be pegged, I would make a good William Jennings Bryan Democrat or a Teddy Roosevelt Republican.

I'm an amateur radio operator and general radio/electronics tinkerer so I know about these things about the radio spectrum. The radio spectrum is up for sale and it should not be, it should be held up for the public interest, there is only so much of it to go around. Depending what frequency you are on, each part of the radio spectrum is good for some things and bad at other things.

At least in Canada, unless there has been a change I don't know about, at least your government takes a more serious (although I'm sure there are imperfections there too) approach at protecting the public interest even there there are still some things that need corrected like the ability to use firearms in self defense of one's home and loved ones for example but addressing the social leftist agenda is for another time. It seems for now, you do have some HDTV stations in Canada but it seems like Canada so far is letting the marketplace decide, if one is a true conservative, what Canada is doing so far should be applauded.

I'll bet Congress Critters call you for economic advice, don't they?

LOL. I reek of common sense. Which is to a congressman what holy water is to a vampire.

Buy a new reefer and you get a fat subsidy check courtesy of all the other utility customers ("ratepayers").

You're not kidding, are you! I can't believe it - I thought I was making a JOKE.

Cordially,

Nope, no kidding. Whenever you dream up a preposterous hypothesis or dream, chances are some gubmint bureaucrat has already beat you to it. PG&E pays you $35 to get rid of your old reefer. You can get a subsidy check for almost anything. Free money for all!!
