Symptom or syndrome? The Ann Coulter phenomenon explored
Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star ^ | 2006-07-20 | Florence King

Posted on 07/26/2006 1:51:09 PM PDT by Junior

I MAY DISAGREE with what Ann Coulter says, but I will defend to the death Oscar Wilde's right to say it. Describing the same kind of widow that set Coulter off, he quipped: "Her hair turned quite gold from grief."

Wondering what life in America would be like if Coulter used a stiletto instead of a sledgehammer is a tempting but futile excursion into dreamland. Suppose, for example, she were confronted--like Jennie Churchill, storied mother of Winston--with a pompous young man who boasted that his financee's virtue was "priced above rubies." Without missing a beat, Jennie said, "Try diamonds."

But if the young man said the same thing to Coulter?

"The godless liberals are trying to link Pat Robertson to Charles Taylor's diamond smuggling cartel in Liberia while they cry crocodile tears over the poor starving Africans they're helping to starve by conniving with radical National Congress goons trained by Winnie Mandela who controls every mine in South Africa, all because they hate Robertson's Christian beliefs so much they'll be cheering and dancing in the streets if Taylor and the god-hating Marxists succeed in smearing him!"

I've loved Florence King's writing since I discovered it nearly 20 years ago. She has a wit and class not found among most of the current crop of pundits.

Oh, this is not going to be popular with some folks, I predict. I wonder if it will stay up....

BTTT! Florence King is one of the funniest writers of the last generation. I don't always agree with her (as they say), but I love the way she puts things.

Florence King is a conservative and an extremely witty one. I predict it'll stay regardless of the Ann-droids' desires.

Pretty interesting. As a writer, I love the wordplay.

"Yeah, I supplied the one from the National Review. My bad.
"

Was this editorial also in National Review?

It looks like Ann is getting some flack from her own side. She may have to tone it down a touch.

And it's an excellent article, too, as I expected.

Have you read her rebuttle of evolution as an explanation for the origin of species? It is in her book GODLESS, the Church of Liberalism - 3 chapters. VERY SOLID. I had never realized the strength of the Intelligent Design perspective, even though I was acquainted with some of evolution's hoaxes, like the Piltdown man.

Tell me something you thing she wrote in this piece that is witty or clever. It's sounds like the same old tired moaning and complaining to me. With an added twist that Coulter isn't enough like the people Florence King likes.

If I had to judge Florence King from this piece alone (and I've never heard of her till now), I'd have to say she's a witless fool.

"Have you read her rebuttle "

Just for your reference, that's "rebuttal," not "rebuttle." It's a common mistake, but one that looks bad, for sure.

Florence King is a good writer.

I go out of my way to read Ann. And Horowitz, and Steyn.

That part of the National Review is subscription only, but I think it's the same one, shown here in the table of contents.

Actually I did, and it was crap. She got her "science" from tertiary sources, and apparently didn't even understand what she had read.

Now, let's consider Piltdown Man. Who discovered it was a hoax? And, what led them to consider it to be a hoax? It was evolutionists, and they considered it a hoax because it did not fit in with evolutionary theory.

Now seeing as how you've done even less research than your goddess when it comes to matters scientific, it might behoove you to actually read something on the subject that was written by a biologist or biochemist rather than a lawyer; you'd be surprised at the actual state of the art.

Sometimes one needs to use heavy guns to route the enemy.

Ann Coulter reminds me of Ayn Rand in style, while the Right wing intellectuals are searching for a clever way of saying something (ala Bill Buckley), Coulter is exposing the Left for what it is and thus, incurring their full wrath.

All the Right wing intellectuals can do in the mean time is to take a sniff from their snuff boxes and agree among themselves how 'boorish she is'

Florence is a great writer. Unfortunately, she's been a conservative long enough to remember the lean years for conservatives.

Flo, we're a full fledged movement now. If you turn the radio dial you can come across any number of conservative talk shows. You can listen all across the ideological and intellectual spectrum, from Hannity to Medved.

We have enough room to let Coulter be Coulter. She's got her purpose and her audience.

LOL! So true. It also pains them that she sells more books than most of them combined.
