MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has changed his political uniform from red to blue and is talking again about running for governor of Alabama, possibly in 2010.
"Alabama, that's my home. I'm thinking about running for governor; they need the help," Barkley said. His decision was received warmly by Joe Turnham, Alabama's Democratic Party chairman, but with skepticism by a political observer.
"I say welcome Charles Barkley. Charles Barkley has been a Horatio Alger story for many people, not only in sports but in business and broadcasting," Turnham said Wednesday.
Turnham said he plans to contact Barkley and invite him to some events the party has coming up.
Jim Seroka, a political science professor at Auburn University, said the former Auburn basketball star is getting ahead of himself by talking about possibly running without first building a base of support or looking at finances.
"He doesn't have any of the bases necessary to run a statewide campaign," Seroka said Wednesday.

Hes right, Charles Barkley said of Mellencamp. The word conservative means discriminatory practically. Its a form of political discrimination. [Conservatives are] against gay marriage and for a war that makes no sense. A war that was based on faulty intelligence. Thats all they ever talk about. That and immigration. Another discriminatory argument for political gain.
I hope Chuckie runs. It'll be great fun to watch him implode.
"He doesn't have any of the bases necessary to run a statewide campaign."
Hmmm .... so just who do these bases belong to?
I despise listening to the jerk, but he makes a good point here.
Brings to mind something about an acorn and a blind pig ...
"...speak correctly,"
he really meant "english", I think.
if not, 'speak properly' will do....this idiot is no Bill Cosby. He just yoosta-be a bassabaw player.
DINO? I can't entirely disagree with his statement. My guess is that Barkley is probably too conservative to the left and too liberal for the right. He probably leans left on social causes and leans right on fiscal ones. In other words, he's electable.
All his base are belong to us!
Though at least he has no criminal indictments or convictions.
In the debate, no doubt he'll pick up his GOP opponent and throw him through a window..
LOL - It just never gets old!!!
Errr. Sir Charles needs to pay more attention to his home state. The gay marriage ban passed with 81% support.
Barkley better remember that 'Bama is still a Crimson state as in "Go Alabama, Drown 'em Tide, Every "Bama Man's Behind You, Hit Your Stride...Go teach those Tigers to Behave, Send the War Eagles to a Watery Grave!"
He may not have a criminal record but he has a lot of baggage. When he was playing here in Phoenix a local trashy newspaper ran a story about a party where Oliver Miller supposedly raped a woman. Before the party began, Sir Charles was said to have stated to the guests "What happens here, stays here."
He was talking about running for AL Governor when he was playing here too. That was about the time that he said "I am not a role model." If he really becomes a candidate, his opponent will use his reputation to tear him to pieces.
Chuck really is about the dumbest goofball on the face of the earth. I never bought his BS about being a Republican in the first place. He is only interested in irritating people and claiming to be a Republican was a good way to do it. If he spontaneously combusted, the world wouldn't care.
