Bush & Blair news conference 12:30ET
They care. And they will fight.
I don't understand what circumstances you are proposing that the USA support any attacks on Israel....
What would Israel have to do? As far as I know right now..the only thing that Israel is guilty of right now is being there. I don't think they attack without provocation, they don't steal land, they don't use suicide bombers.
I certainly would NOT go along with a plan that would have the US backing attacks on Israel for NO reason.
IF Israel DID do some of those things I listed above..I would NOT be as staunchly in their corner.
Here's the gist of it... If there is a Pali state created comprising of most of the West Bank and Gaza, the U.S./GB would explicitly guarantee that any future attacks on Israel would be met with Israeli and U.S. force.
Basically, the deal would be, Israel gives up the land, and the U.S./GB act as guarantors to their safety from that point on.
LOL...BOY did I misinterpret it...I am so sorry.
Yes..I can go along with that..but, I think that just like in Lebanon..the "legit" government needs to get rid of the "terrorist wing" of the Palestinian govt. As long as they have Hamas as part of the Govt...I doubt it we could even get that far.
Like has been said...HAMAS does NOT want peace..they want to fight. They don't want to work, play, live..they want to kill and fight, it is what they do.
I certainly would be FOR the US guaranteeing any kind of support that Israel would need.
Once again...I am very sorry for misreading and misinterpreting your post.
No problem. My view is that if Israel is going to compromise their security by having a state on either side of it's country, they would need some guarantees of protection. The U.S. may be willing to go along. You gotta incentivise them, otherwise it won't work, IMO.
Hey, don't laugh -- those troops from Ghana are crack shots with spitballs.
Maybe. I think it's something else entirely.
First and foremost, he came into elective politics somewhat late in his life. Nothing prior to the time he first ran for governor prepared him for public speaking at a high level. Considering all that he's accomplished, it's remarkable to pause and realize GWB was first elected governor on November 8, 1994, less than 12 years ago.
Secondly, it's the timber and cadence of his voice. Rather than being full and mellifluous, it's somewhat dry, clipped and twangy. The twang sometimes seems to get caught in the back of his throat, giving a slight whine to his voice. (I don't mean whine in the emotional sense here, but tonality.) His cadence is frequently, though not always monotone. Especially when he's tired, he often slips into a sing-song cadence.
Thirdly, GWB clearly doesn't enjoy public speaking, and he's not a natural at it. His personal style is plain, blunt and direct, not given to soaring rhetoric. It's the antithesis of the qualities one wants in a public speaker.
His real style was never more clearly seen -- and never more effective -- than when he stood on that ruined fire truck atop the still-smouldering pile at Ground Zero in NYC and said, "I can hear you. The rest of the world can hear you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."
He's at his best when he's fresh and well-rested -- and also when he connects emotionally with the subject at hand.
Despite his natural discomfort with public speaking, GWB has given some of the most significant and, yes, beautiful speeches by any U.S. president.
Actually, they voted for Hamas, let them learn the hard way, as they're doing now. Once they are isolated from the world, they will have no choice but to adapt. When Iraq starts to flourish in a few years, and Israel looks prosperous (and perhaps the Iranian people will change their government), the seeds of democracy will spread. The hate can only feed them for so long, they'll want the things the real democracies have. Again, just my strong opinion.
Unfortunately my hubby shared his summer cold and I've been in misery!!! LOLOL.......ah well.
So nice being back on line. Missed you!
Eternity is long time. We still have forces in Bosnia and Kosovo. Israel does not want to return to Lebanon and has so stated. It is a drain on their forces and is counterproductive. It helps Hezbullah.
It all depends, spoken like someone who does not know what "Emulating Muhammad means". Israel will have several billion reasons why they will get snowed and restrained by the west again. What happens if a Dem dove gets to control foreign policy again, depends is Chamberlain speak for peace in our time as well as excuse if all goes wrong again.
Without US support, Israel would have a difficult time surviving. The idea that we are preventing Israel from taking decisive action is nonsense. There are limits to what it can against its neighbors short of annilating them. If the Dems control the WH, they will respond just like the Reps. The US support of Israel's survivability is non-partisan. Just take a look at any bill supporting Israel and you will see overwhelming support from both parties.
What kind of hyperbole is that? Going in militarily and wiping out your enemies all for the cause of self defense is genocide? You must be a sympathetic Arab by throwing out the genocide card. The Mullahs are for genocide, Israel is just trying to protect themselves. If that means killing people so be it.
You make it sound so simple. It is very difficult to wipe out guerillas, especially if they receive support from the general populace. Unless you can find a way to easily differentiate between a Hezbullah fighter/sympathizer, and a non-involved civilain, how do you propose "wiping them out?" Genocide is a strong word and intentionally so. I can't see any Israeli government supporting such an action, but short of that, it is not so easy as the Israelis have discovered over the past 58 years. Your ad hominen attack reflects more on you than me. It is the last refuge of the intelletually bankrupt.
BS. Who funds them Sherlock? Not the Syrians and Iranians, surly not. Oh my you are an astute one aren't you. You take out the Mullahs who go about brainwashing the masses and you will take out the Hezzies.
LOL. So your suggest is to start taking out the mullahs worldwide? The Syrians are a sectarian state in much the same way that Iraq was. The mullahs may run Iran, but they don't run Syria. The mullahs don't have to brainwash anyone. They just have to show pictures of Gaza and Lebanon. The WOT cannot be won without toppling the Iranian regime.
Your bias is showing again. Who the hell cares what CNNABCCBSNBC etc... thinks. Remember 911 and the ideology behind that, that is what Johnny six pack will be thinking when Israel and the west eradicates the Mullahs.
Bias? In any event, Israel has very few supporters around the world. They still must deal with world opinion and its effects. The US just vetoed a measure in the UN condemning Israel's "disporportionate" response in Lebanon and calling for an immediate ceasefire. France, Greece, China, Japan and Russia were among the 10 countries who voted for it with the UK being one of the four abstaining. The EU issued a similar statement.
The US and the West are not about to declare war on Islam and its billion plus adherents. The enemy is militant Islam, a small minority.
Placemark.
They are fighting now and have been for the past 25 years, including blowing up the Marine Barracks in Lebanon, bombing our embassy in Beiruit three times, and killing American diplomats.
We are going around in a circle.
If you believe that Bush and Blair are looking for a cease fire between Israel and Hezbolla so that the International community- Turks, French, maybe Brits, etc- will then pick up the fight to disarm Hezbolla- keep dreaming.
If what you believe is not a fantastical dream -but true- it will turn into a nightmare for everyone.
I believe that they are trying to extricate Israel from the current situation, which is a no-win for them. Israel is not going to be able to eradicate Hezbullah from Lebanon nor does Israel want commit the resources and time to reoccupy Lebanon. The Israeli public would not stand for it.
Israel's problem with Hezbullah, which it recognized when it withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, was that it would fill in the vacuum left by Israel and again start attacking across the border. Hence 1559. The UN observers have been ineffective and corrupt. Israel can either deal with Lebanon itself and suffer the slings and arrows of the international community and enhance Hezbullah's recruitment or try a different international solution that will not return to the status quo ante.
Israel's main consideration should be a secure border with Lebanon and the inability of Hezbullah to conduct attacks against Israel from Lebanon. If this new multinational force can acheive those two outcomes, it is a victory for Israel and costs them nothing. Disarming Hezbullah and building a strong democracy in Lebanon are additional objectives, which should not concern Israel as much as long as the first two are achieved.
If what you believe is not a fantastical dream -but true- it will turn into a nightmare for everyone.
If Israel accepts this kind of solution, what's your beef? I suspect that Bush and Blair have been talking to Israel prior to the press conference and have obtained Israel's general agreement over the proposal with details to be worked out later. It is far from being a fantasy. Let's see what happens next week after Condi's trip and the UN SC meeting.
"Basically, the deal would be, Israel gives up the land, and the U.S./GB act as guarantors to their safety from that point on."
Would never happen. Israel would never trust a liberal president with its fate.
The only solution is to keep killing Hezbollah, Hamas, al Qaeda and other terrorists. "Negotiating", "cease fire", and "peace-keeping force" are all total nonsense.
I am so sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well..I hope you get better soon..
Have you had a chance to check out the Middle East LIVE threads we have had???
I have pretty much parked myself on those threads for 2 weeks...haven't even gone to the talk show threads.
I will ping you to it if you want me too!
