This past Friday, 30-year-old Naveed Afsal Haq, a supposedly lone and mentally ill Muslim-American of Pakistani origin, took a 13-year-old girl hostage in order to gain entry to the Jewish Federation Building in Seattle. Declaring himself angry with Israel, Haq announced that it was a hostage situation, and began shooting only women, including a pregnant woman. Five women were wounded and one, 58 year-old Pam Waechter, was murdered. Several other women were shot in the abdomen.
Haq's brutal attack is no ordinary crime. It is the product of an Islamic culture that denigrates women in general and a jihadist culture that specifically seeks to destroy life. Thus, many Islamic suicide killers will purposely target pregnant women or women with small children before they blow themselves up. It should come as no surprise, then, that Haq is also up on a misdemeanor charge for lewd conduct -- accused of exposing himself in a public place.
Like the parents of many other jihadists, Haqs parents were shocked to learn of what their son had done. Their reaction is reminiscent of the friends and relatives of male serial killers, who could never believe that such a nice fellow could be capable of so gruesome a crime.
What is sure, however, is that a pattern is emerging. Haq follows in the bloody footsteps of Jack the Ripper and Ted Bundy, the Seattle-based Green River killer, all of whom preyed either on prostitutes or vulnerable women of a certain age and type. Unlike Haq, these killers did not emerge from ideological or political cults. Washington states Green River Killer murdered more than forty prostitutes and Ted Bundy (who also operated in and around Seattle), murdered more than a hundred women across the country. Yet they did not target Jewish women, nor was their misogynist rage fueled by jihadist politics.
Like Mohammed Atta, Haq had no interest in sexually assaulting Jewish women, only in killing them. Given Haqs indictment for lewd behavior in public, but absent a jihadist influence we might expect him to (merely) become a sexual predator, and not necessarily a killer. Or, if his sexualized rage became murderous we might expect him to kill womennot just Jewish women.
Haqs act is chillingly reminiscent of the Montreal Massacre which took place on December 6, 1989. Marc Lepine entered the engineering school at the University of Montreal and gunned down fourteen women and wounded fifteen others. Lepine, who had been rejected by both the Canadian Army and the engineering school at the University of Montreal, said in his suicide note that he was after the feminist viragos who had ruined his life.
The Canadian police saw this as an isolated act of a madman (as American police had once viewed Ted Bundys bloody trail of femicide). What the Canadian police failed to understand was the importance of certain biographical and childhood factors. For example, Lepine was born Gamile Rodrigue Gharbi to an Algerian Muslim father and a French-Canadian mother who had formerly been a nun. Lepines father, Liess Gharbi, physically and psychologically brutalized both his son and his wife. He probably taught his son that women are chattel property who deserve to be beaten even when they are obedientand perhaps murdered when they are not. What is important to note is that Gharbi/Lepine blamed women for the considerable crimes of his father. As Dr. Chesler recounts in her book, The Death of Feminism, in 2001 an angry mob of 300 Algerian men conducted a three-day pogrom against Algerian women in which they tortured, stabbed, mutilated, gang-raped, buried alive and murdered women in Hassi Messaoud.
In Dr. Cheslers 1978 book, About Men, she posited that the paternal abandonment of, and cruelty towards sons may be a crucial component in mother- and woman-hating. Dr. Nancy Kobrin, in her forthcoming book The Sheiks New Clothes: The Naked Truth About Islamic Suicide Terrorism, posits that the absolute degradation of Arab and Muslim women by a shame- and honor-society means that sons must perpetually rid themselves of the contamination that contact with women represents; and that sons must psychologically abandon their motherswhich they may also experience as being abandoned by their mothers. Many such sons are trained to mistrust, police, routinely batter, and sometimes even murder their female relatives.
Dr. Kobrin believes that such psychological dynamics may play a crucial role in contemporary Islamic terrorism. Furthermore, the Jewess is the most denigrated female in Islamic ideology. Think about Zaynab bint Al-Harith, the Khaybar Jewess, who was falsely accused of poisoning the prophet Muhammad after having witnessed the be-heading of her entire male community in the Battle of Khaybar after the Jewish men had surrendered. Not coincidentally, Hezbollah calls its missiles "Khaybar." We have also been told that a new Iranian television station is also known as Kaybar.
A Jewish woman who knew the murdered Pam Waechter told us that Waechter was born a Lutheran and converted to Judaism. She was a better Jew than I or most of us could ever be, she said. Jewish tradition believes that messianic redemption will enter the world through the good deeds of women converts to Judaism, beginning with Ruth, the ancestor of King David. Let us learn the necessary lessons about redemption from Pam Waechters martyrdom.
At the same time, let us not forget that innocence is no defense against fanatical killers driven by hatred of women and Jewish women above all. Jewish women in America, many of whom are progressives and liberals, must now wrestle with the tragedy in Seattle. It will not do to blame Israel for Haqs crime. The fact is that all Jewish women, whatever their political views, are targets of jihadists who will shoot first and never make inquires about where their victims stand on the question of Israel and Palestine.
Phyllis Chesler, Ph.D is the author of thirteen books including The New Anti-Semitism and the forthcoming The Islamization of America. She may be reached through her website www. Phyllis-Chesler.com. Nancy Kobrin, Ph.D is a psycho-analyst and Affiliate Professor at the University of Haifa.
Possible jihadis: The doctor who shot the bicyclist recently , and I think the killing of the Egyptian Copt family , while commited by their tenant, may have moslem influence-moslems are allowed to lie about being moslems, so who knows what besides greed and hatred influenced the killers?
Most freepers have all seen the report called The Color of Crime. The report was based on the USDJ report for 1993, and it showed that whites are victims of violent crimes at the hands of blacks far more often than the converse-19 whites are murdered by black(s) for everyone one black person killed by white(s), 40 white women raped by black(s) for every one black woman raped by white(s), and so forth. (I have not read the report lately, and those figures are from memory, so I may be wrong-but I do recall the rape of black women by white men was called "statistically insignificant".) We know that black people make up 60% of the moslems living in the USA (but only 2% of black people are moslem-while 6% are Roman Catholic, according to stats posted to FR in 09/01).We know that moslem proseltyzing is rampant in our prisons. Who knows how many black criminals who choose white victims are doing so out of hatred of the infidel, with antiwhite hatred just a "bonus"? After all, the koran condones pretty much anything done to terrorize the infidel. How many converts to islam convert to get a chance to murder, maim, rob, and rape with not just the clear conscience granted by theories of racial payback, but with the inner glow of knowing one is doing allah's will? I wish someone was keeping track of the recidivism rates on moslems converted while in prison. In any case, there may be far more Amateur Jihadism RIGHT NOW than even those of us who are looking for cases may realize, since the media likes to play down black-on-white violent crime in the first case.
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
This article confims not only the reality of Islam's oppression of women in Islam, but also extend this oppression to non-Muslim women. Also this is a sad reminder that it is open season not only on Jews but also Christians and other non-Muslims.
Could it be because they are also fearful for their lives?
Thanks for posting this. One line says it all -
"Jewish women in America, many of whom are progressives and liberals, must now wrestle with the tragedy in Seattle."
A lot of my girlfriends -Jew and Gentile- dislike my conservative politics, but they can't disagree with my views in terms of who's acting in their best interests. I'm still amazed I have to argue my points in a post 9/11 world.
BTW - I was living blocks away from the U of M when the massacre happened. All the media buried Lepine's Algerian heritage. Most simply think of him as a French Canadian.
What was the movie theatre incident? And the night club incident? I didn't hear about those.
Oh, and I remember another one-a moslem at a university in NC IIRC mowed down a group of his fellow students wit his vehicle. Again, I don't believe anyone was killed, but there were multiple injuries.
I searched FR and found a link to the NC incident
NonUS crime links welcome, like the case where the moslem decided he wanted to kill a Jew, so he lured a friend to his apartment. That atrocity was commited in Paris last year or 2004.
The silence that is deafenibg! Perhaps TROP adherents promised to kill them last.
Right on - that was my first reaction - a temple with NO armed guards? What's up with that?
I just took a week of my vacation to teach 50+ young women how to shoot. Lots of fun, and now I know these women are better prepared to defend themselves.
Nobody will take care of (defend) you like you will.
re: "Society is secular;"
I hope you are wrong. Our society is a mixture of many belief systems competing in the marketplace of ideas. Secularism is only one of those belief systems involved in the competition.
Some competing belief systems prefer to use FORCE rather than seeking voluntary acceptance/conversion. The great strength or our society starts with the Judeo-Christian tradition best expressed by Joshua upon leading a group of illegal immigrants into Palestine:
"Choose you this day whom you will serve. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
That choice in society is the key difference.
Yes, it is true that Islamist culture denigrates women in general. But was the perp looking for women specifically to shoot down? Or was the motive Islamic antisemitism in general?
According to reports, the gunman announced that he was a Muslim and didn't like what Israel was doing. It's a stretch from this one line to infer that the victims were chosen because they were women, rather than because they were thought to be Jewish - since they worked for a Jewish organization. We don't know for a fact that he was specifically targeting women. If he had encoutered Jewish men perceived to be helpless, he might well have gunned them down as well. It's difficult to say with any degree of certainty.
A terrorist seeking a Jewish community center in midweek means seeking women and children. Same pattern at a Los Angeles a few years ago.
Question for the Author: And I suppose if this guy had crossed paths with any men in the Center, he would've wished them a fond "Good Day" and went on about looking for more women to shoot.
I'd never heard that. That case became quite a cause celebre among feminists - hard proof in their eyes that men just hated women on principle and were walking around looking for opportunities to act out their frustrations. Guess neither they nor the Canadian police had any interest in letting the Muslim angle mess up their story.
I don't know if there's anything to this, at least in this case, but it's an interesting thought. Schools and community centers are often targets, and they're no softer than Synagogues, all these places have had security and/or guards for years because of the threat. If I can find a quick link or two, I'll post them, but in the mideast women and children have been acknowledged as superior targets as it kills not just a Jew, but future generations.
This was not at a Jewish community center (though it was erroneously headlined to be so in some media accounts). It was at the offices of a Jewish charity organization, which had sponsored a large pro-Israel rally days before the incident.
My sentiments exactly..well said, my friend!
