I'd like to see everyone go through Basic Training, or some variant thereof, as a prerequisite to voter registration. If you don't care enough about your country to learn the tiniest crumb of last-ditch defense, then you shouldn't have any say in how it's run.
Totally unrealistic in terms of numbers and the logistics involved let alone the legal hurdles that would thrown in the way.
So when did you go?
We could at least draft into a sort of standby militia. Everyone given very basic training, and then be available for homeland defense. Be that against Jihadies, or illegals at the border.
Legally the militia still exists, no need to draft anyone, as all are already members. (Although "all" means different things in different states and at the federal level. At the federal level it means all men, up to a certain age, in Texas it means *all*, men and women.) Just make the minimal training mandatory, but only for those with no criminal record, adult or juvenile. Then like the Swiss and Israelis, send the trainees home with a brand new assault rifle and a ready supply of ammunition. (Wouldn't that get the gun grabbers knickers in a bunch? :) )
We should have a universal draft at some age between 16 and 18 for military training only of, perhaps 6 months. It should consist only of basic and infantry training with no posting to any job in the military and graduates should not be allowed to enlist in the active military for some period after finishing the draft-training. It would familiarize all with the military which would eliminate the primary reason that young men fight going in and do not consider defending their country. They fear an unknown thing. With the training, all are familiar with concepts and practices of military things. When there is a need for troops the volunteers will be enough that the military can pick and choose to whatever standard it wants and they will need only a couple of weeks of refresher training before they can be sent into the field. The military life will not be a general object of fear.
