Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

Police Looking For Stolen Nuclear Device

RENTON, Wash. -- Police in Renton are looking for a nuclear device that was inside a car that was stolen last month.

The device is inside a large yellow box with warning stickers on the outside.

The device looks like a scale. It's 18 inches tall and is used to measure ground moisture.

Police in Renton are looking for a moisture density gauge that is missing after a car that transported the device was stolen. The device contains radioactive material.

The vehicle used to transport the device was found on July 21, but the device was not inside.

Police said anyone who sees the device or knows where it is should call 800-486-6922.

While the U.S. has labeled Hezbollah a terrorist organization, many Arabs view the Shiite group as a legitimate resistance movement, and some Arab American community leaders say it is unlikely the government's stepped up vigilance will diminish support in the area for the group.

"Who should they chant for? George Bush, the one who's sending Israel bombs to kill their relatives, to kill more people?" said Osama Siblani, the publisher of The Arab American News and spokesman for the Council of Arab American Organizations.

"If they want to prosecute us, prosecute us. Let them get their buses, line them up and haul us out."

The FBI has renewed contacts with informants, held private meetings with Arab-American and Muslim leaders and voiced concern about public support shown for Hezbollah at rallies in Dearborn, a Detroit suburb with a large Shiite Muslim community, the Free Press reported.

At some rallies, demonstrators held portraits of Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, chanting his name and Hezbollah, the newspaper said. Law enforcement officials also have alerted local leaders in the Jewish community about potential security threats at synagogues. The area is also home to about 70,000 Jews, mainly descendants of immigrants from Eastern Europe."

FBI Interested in Large Prepaid Cell Phone Purchases

WEST VIRGINIA

Store clerks in Grafton say people have been coming into their stores and buying several phones at a time.

Folks at the Dollar General in Grafton say in the past few days, several men have come into the store attempting to buy large numbers of prepaid phones. However, store policy only allows a customer to buy two phones at a time, in fact, they are locked away from the general public.

The clerks say after they were in the Dollar General, the men went to the Grafton Walmart to try to purchase more of the phones.

Grafton police found one man during a traffic stop. They say he had hundreds of prepaid phones in his car. (snip)

City police said they are investigating incidences where two Middle Eastern males bought several Trac prepaid cell phones between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Police said the males purchased several phones from at least two stores at the Uniontown Shopping Center, located on Morgantown Street.

The males were seen driving a white van with license plate bearing North Carolina registration RV5956, police said, noting that both men were wearing jeans and white shirts.

Anyone who saw the men or the van is asked to call Detective Donald Gmitter at 724-430-2929, ext. 310. More information will be available in Tuesday's Herald-Standard.

"Christian South Koreans to be deported"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "KABUL -- Afghanistan plans to deport hundreds of visiting South Korean Christians over security fears after Islamic clerics demanded their expulsion, accusing them of trying to spread Christianity.
There was no official comment from the Afghan government, but a member of the visiting Korean team in Kabul confirmed the deportation order.
"Yes, yes, we have been told to leave Afghanistan because of security concerns," Kang Sung-han told Reuters news agency.
He said the Koreans in the capital have been confined to their guest houses while those outside Kabul have begun returning to prepare to leave the country.
A Foreign Ministry official in Seoul said the Afghan government had deported 35 of the evangelical Christians in the past few days and soon would send home 900 more. "
