Former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker is headed for a U.S. Senate showdown with Democrat Harold Ford Jr. in November after sweeping to the Republican nomination on Thursday night.

Corker celebrated the win for the seat now held by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist at the Sheraton Read House in Chattanooga.

He had fought a bloody primary against former Congressmen Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary, who made concession speeches.

In Hamilton County, Corker piled up 20,555 votes to 5,863 for Bryant and 3,919 for Hilleary.

The Nashville Tennessean, with 1,762 of 2,432 precincts statewide reporting, had Corker at 175,092, Bryant at 126,900 and Hilleary at 56,840.

I doubt Ford is going to threaten this safe GOP seat.

I've said that a Ford can't lose in Shelby County or win outside the County. I hope we're both right.

He won't win in Shelby by enough margin to help him by time voters become ill of the Ford baggage the GOP will be sure to point out...

Well, I hope he can beat Ford Jr. Did the other Ford (not Ophelia) win in the primary for US Rep?

There it is - had Hilleary done the right and honorable thing and got out Bryant would have 183,740 to the RINO's 175,092 (at this point).

I like Lamar Alexander. he might not be as rabidly conservative but he's a damn site better than John McCain or hagel or Graham or that idiot from RI, Chafee, or Collins or Snowe.

Many conservatives seem to lack political sophistication and shoot themselves in the foot.

Why is that?

While I agree with you, if either one had pulled out, Corker never would have had a chance.

This is textbook base splitting, the equivalent of a 3rd party run, and even worse, Corker (who is a real deal RINO) at least would have been strong, now its a weak RINO versus a socialist who has good soundbites and strong media backing.

Get a conservative to run 3rd party, at least conservatives will turnout if they have someone to vote. No more RINO's

AMEN! The first goal in these elections should be, like in the Hippocratic Oath, to do no harm. IMO, someone similar to Lamar Alexander is a hundred times better than a Democrat who must answer to all of the wacko leftist groups.

Many conservatives seem to lack political sophistication and shoot themselves in the foot. Why is that?

Basically, conservatives are geared more toward working within the framework of ethics than huckstering, gladhanding and deal-cutting. In a music industry analogy, think of the RINOs as company-pushed "latest flavors" of little substance while the conservatives are the massively talented yet low key session musicians who make the record listenable.

The latest Rasmussen Poll has Corker 11 points or so ahead of Ford. Harold Ford, Jr. is an overly opportunistic media grabbing jerk. The dem leadership doesn't like him and doesn't trust him, especially Pelosi.

Does Ford retain his House seat if he loses?
