Dixie Chicks fly the coop
Herald Today ^ | August 4 2006 | WADE TATANGELO

Posted on 08/05/2006 5:51:30 AM PDT by NautiNurse

It was announced late today that the Dixie Chicks's Oct. 5 concert at the St. Pete Times Forum in has been cancelled. Ticket holders were advised to contact their original point of purchase for refunds and information on alternate area concerts.

The Dixie Chicks camp is reporting that the tour was rerouted "to allow the group some promotion time in September around the debut of the documentary film 'Dixie Chicks' Shut Up and Sing.'"

The Dixie Chicks released the following statement: "This is a year where we weren't sure what to expect. We were prepared for a lot of things as we figure out this new phase of our career. What we weren't prepared for, however, was the overly passionate audience response at all of the stops on the tour so far. We are truly at a loss for words to explain what that has meant to us. We hope that our fans who were looking forward to a stop that is no longer on the tour will be able to join us at a nearby arena this fall, and we are sorry for any confusion or inconvenience these changes have caused."

The Dixie Chicks have been mostly blacklisted from country radio ever since singer Natalie Maines criticized President Bush, despite the fact that the group's album "Taking The Long Way" is one of the biggest sellers in country music this year. The Miami Herald reports that "ticket sales in Red States have been sluggish throughout the tour."

Did you think that everyone of their fans before the controversy was a conservative? Or that every DC fan actually paid much attention to the comments?

When you have an album sell more than 10 million copies and you sell out across the country, you definitely have to have some fans outside the traditional country base. Heck, they were on the last Lilith tour -- not exactly a bastion of conservative fans. So selling a million or two albums even after chasing away 3/4th's of their fans doesn't mean that George Soros bought every copy. The DC's can still make a lot of money preaching entertaining the 10-20% of their old fan base that are either liberal or politically passive. It just won't be as much money as they could make in the past. Their mistake was assuming that they still could tour the same places and same big arenas.

Don't make the Pauline Kael mistake and assume that everyone is like you.

Thanks for the link. I am fond of Bully Hill wines myself, although I will try all NY wines.

Typical - they cancel a concert and blame the "little people" for being confused.

We are not confused, we are not buying their cd's.

I agree with post 81.

The chicks blew off about 70% of their fans but that still leaves 25-30% to buy the cd.

We do have 300 million people in this country including 60 million who voted for kerry. I think you can find at least 1 million to buy their crap.

I saw one of their primary songwriters from the old days at the pool the other day. I felt sorry for him a bit. They cost him a bundle.

Not that he is hurting otherwise...but why simply burn up goodwill and royalties cause fatty can't shut her big mouth?

The little I've read about Maines indicates she's been a hot head with an axe to grind all of her life. It's a bit remarkable that the other Chicks go along with it. Who knows, maybe they are scared of her.

That act like they share her lib views though not as shrill

Their management here are libs as well

I think Maines is ignorant more than anything

but, the Chicks were not too much till she joined with her quirky vocals and presence...admittedly

Do you think FR will get honorable mention in their documentary, "Shut Up and Sing?"

Yeah, right. If true, why doesn't anyone go to their concerts? Any clue why supposedly sooooooooo many love their music but won't bother to come hear them? Tell me. What's happening?

And those Kerry voters you talk about? The 12% of the populations that's black and voted for Kerry probably aren't natural fans of the Dixie Chicks, then the intellectual elites aren't going to go for the down home country sound, and the northern union guys aren't too country... So who's left? Liberal feminist? Yep, they're into "country" - NOT.

Maybe Kerry's butler listens to country music - but I doubt that too... I give - who on the left is going to show up for a concert?

OK, I give. Tell me why all these dedicated fans aren't going to any of their concerts? If the fans loved the music, they would show up. Right? If not, why not. You must understand something I'm missing...

Here's my guess - I think there's lots of women who can sing. And sing well - but there some magical chemistry that can happen between singers and their audience that transcends the music - and a star is created. When that group gives the finger to their fans, the magic dies. Dies. The music is left - and it might be good, but it's not the same. It's never the same - and it's not enough. Even when it is good. There's lot of women who can sing...

through 10 us concert dates this year, I estimate about 14,000 per or 140,000 have gone to the concerts in the US so far.

true only 1 concert was in a red state, ohio, no concert was a sell out and most had about 5,000 empty seats.

And then Natalie opened her fat mouth and ran them off. The latest Chicks' album has sold just a tad over 1.5 million, sales have leveled off sharply, and it's seriously doubtful that they will make 2 million sales. It's pretty simple math: over 80% of their fans have gone elsewhere for their music entertainment.

But I also have read literally hundreds of Chicks postings the last few days on a number of Web sites across the political spectrum, and they show a genuine consensus from country fans saying that Maines in effect filed for divorce from country audiences.

I agree. Say all you want about web postings and negative publicity. None of it would mean a thing to music fans if it just appeared out of the blue. Sony BMG, Free Republic, and the myriad of web blogs have very little effect on the music that people buy or like. Natalie showed most of her fans the door when she publicly called most of them "dumb rednecks who don't get it".

The high water mark of Dixie Chicks album sales was approx. 12 million. This latest album has barely made 1.5 million and leveling off. So 85% of their fans have moved along at Natalie's request.

That flick is being done by the same chick (Barbara Kopple) who did Harlan County USA and that horrid flick Havoc whose only redeeming quality are Anne Hathaway's bared cenos.

Will be slatheringly unctuous is my bet.

I have never witnessed a commercial entertainment act voluntarily screw the pooch like they have in my almost 50 years.

They just burned a lot of cash....probably over 100 million in CDs, tour reciepts and merchandise and endorsements so they could run their mouths....at a minimum.

They are loathed here in Nashville by all but the urban hip homo meets granola crowd.

Like I said, I saw their main writer a few days ago socially.... who helped put them there in the beginning. I'm sure he is grateful for their inability to be polite and discreet.....and what it cost him from BMI or ASPAC
