He was the right man for his time. We may not agree with everything he did but there was a very real possiblity that without him there could have been either a Communist Revolution in the USA, a fascist revolution in the USA, and/or the total Nazi or Soviet domination of Europe.
Actually all of your possibilities might have happened.
Or we might be speaking Japanese on the West Coast and German on East Coast and Midwest.
