3 Egyptians Held in Failure to Appear for Exchange Program

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 9 — Three Egyptian students who failed to appear for their exchange program in Montana were in custody on Wednesday, the authorities said. The whereabouts of eight other Egyptian students were unknown.

One student, Eslam Ibrahim Mohamed el-Dessouki, 21, was arrested here on an administrative immigration violation, federal officials said. Two others, whose names were not released, surrendered at police headquarters in Manville, N.J.

“In response to hearing in the media that they should turn themselves in to the nearest police station, they did just that,” Steven Siegel, a spokesman for the F.B.I. in Newark, said.

The bureau said the missing students posed no terrorism threat.

The men were in a group of 17 students destined for Montana State University who arrived from Cairo on July 29 at Kennedy International Airport in New York, federal and university officials said. The other six arrived at the campus in Bozeman.

Enough of this PC crap, especially with the news tonight. It is time to profile at airports.

I'm all in favor of certain kinds of profiling, but there's a drawback. Turns out there are a lot of blonde, blue-eyed Muslims in Russia and the former Yugoslavia. There are also Caucasian Muslim converts who are just as crazy as the rest of the jihadis. We can certainly keep an eye out for young dark Muslim men, but what do we do about the blue-eyed European Muslims? The American black Muslims? The Asian Muslims? The women? What do we do about the Arab men who get plane tickets in the name of Jose Ramirez or Herb Weinstock? They can blow planes up just as well as the young Arab men.

And I'll let you in on a secret: ICE is profiling. Mr. Fairview and I and a couple who are our close friends went on vacation together. So we had a very dark, bearded man of pure English extraction and a very dark, bearded Jewish man. (They have beards because they're both scientists and they think it's a union rule or something.) Both as American as apple pie. Boy, did they get a lot of attention. I saw security people and others who were trying not to be noticed, eyeing them as they animatedly talked about science and skiing. They did not get searched any more than anybody else but certain people were certainly giving them the once-over visually.
