Nets Ignore Cynthia McKinney Entourage’s Election Night Meltdown

If a long-time member of Congress lost a primary battle for re-election, and his/her campaign entourage shouted racial epithets at reporters and about her opponent after defeat, do you think this would have been on the evening news? Well, if said member of Congress was a Democrat, the answer apparently is “no,” for not one of the broadcast networks felt it was newsworthy to report Tuesday evening's events involving Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Georgia).

For those that haven’t heard, McKinney’s campaign entourage now includes members of the New Black Panthers. After her primary defeat Tuesday to Hank Johnson for Georgia’s 4th Congressional district, some of these folks went on a bit of a rampage referring to white reporters as “crackers,” calling her opponent an “Uncle Tom,” blaming her loss on Israel, and shouting anti-Semitic epithets at a Jewish reporter

Hashim Nzinga, who identified himself as the New Black Panther Party's national chief of staff, said in a telephone interview Sunday that his organization volunteered to protect McKinney after learning she had received threats.

I'm very worried that McKinney and her staff have complete access to the Capitol building until January. The hate shown by her entourage on the video is very disturbing. The capital police will have their hands full keeping an eye on her.

McKinney Supporters Blaming Jews


First there was a scuffle between McKinney's bodyguards and an 11Alive news photographer, then there were remarks made to a cable network news crew, in which members of McKinney's entourage allegedly made shocking anti-Semitic remarks.

The remarks were allegedly made just moments after McKinney's entourage passed out of earshot of 11Alive cameras, as the congresswoman left her campaign headquarters on Tuesday night.

Someone reportedly said quote, “You wanna know what led to the loss? Israel. The Zionists. You. put on your yarmulke and celebrate."

During the final days of the campaign, one face continued to show up in photographers’ lenses – McKinney’s personal bodyguard, Steve Muhammad.

On one occasion, Muhammad said, "Right now it's personal -- she's having personal conversation can't you understand that."

And on Tuesday afternoon, during an altercation with an 11Alive photojournalist, Muhammad said, “That’s right, and I'm going to touch you again if you do that again.”

According to a police report, a member of McKinney’s security team got into a scuffle with a photographer from WXIA-TV.

Steve Muhammad, 67, alleges that photographer Gary Stillwell, 24, hit him in the eye outside the Omega Psi Phi Center on Snapfinger Road about 11:25 p.m., according to a police report released Wednesday morning by DeKalb County police.

But 11 News Donna Lowry reports it this way on the TV station’s website:

During her concession speech, McKinney said her mother was hurt and one of her staffers required stitches after members of the media hurt them during the night. Police were eventually called to the scene by 11Alive News.

As McKinney walked outside her campaign headquarters after losing her reelection bid to Hank Johnson, a boom microphone carried by a photographer struck members of McKinney's entourage. In the confusion, McKinney staffers struck an 11Alive photographer and knocked his camera equipment to the ground.

A short time later, the 11Alive news desk called 9-1-1 after some people followed an 11Alive staff member into the station's satellite truck outside the McKinney headquarters.
