Islamabad claims credit for foiling bomb plot [Pakistan made terror plot arrests]

PAKISTAN confirmed last night that the arrests over the airline bombing blot were a result of its active co-operation with British intelligence.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry said that co-ordinating arrests were also made within Pakistan. Many of those detained in connection with the alleged plot are believed to be of Pakistani origin and made frequent trips between the two countries.

Britain is understood to have approached intelligence sources in Pakistan weeks ago for information about them. London also asked for assistance in tracking their movements.

It was not clear last night when the suspects last travelled there or whether they had links with Islamic militants.

Pakistan has been accused of failing to deal with militant groups within its borders. But yesterday its security sources said that intelligence-sharing with Britain had helped to break terror plots in the past.

Many Pakistani immigrants have strong links with the country of their origin. Some young Muslims have been influenced by militant groups there and received ideological and military training in their camps.

"Islamabad claims credit for foiling bomb plot"

That's fine, so long as they also claim credit for hosting the plotters in the first place.

Thank you Pakistan. I know you're having a hard time with your own terrorists, so I appreciate the courage it took to help us.

One of the major accomplishments of GWB and his Administration has been to improve relations with Pakistan.

Kudos to GWB and to the Paki's.

You know, the title of the article is heavy into setting the focus on Pakistan taking credit. But the text of the article seems to hem and haw at what is coming out of Pakistan. The reference to a "spokeswoman" - "A spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry said" - implied to me that this spokewoman is in the British Foreign Ministry. There is also an oblique reference to Pakistan sources, but without a direct reference to the latest arrests.

... it just seems to me an agenda piece, with the editor trying to shift the emphasis on what Pakistan might have done, without saying it.

Think any of his 'comrades-in-suicide beverages' have access to his e-mail? Is a FReep in order? Nah...probably shouldn't mess with any possible ongoing counterterror operations.

I don't think you want DHS/CIA/MI5/et al wondering why your email is in his mailbox.
