Plane plot involved 'explosive cocktail,' official says

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Terrorists were in the "final stages" of a plot to simultaneously blow up as many as 10 jets leaving Britain for the U.S., sending the planes and thousands of passengers into the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.

British and Pakistani authorities teamed up to thwart the attacks, and 24 men were arrested in overnight raids in Britain, authorities said.

An undercover British agent infiltrated the group, giving the authorities intelligence on the alleged plan, several U.S. government officials said.

The men had not bought plane tickets, the officials said, but they were in the process of perusing the Internet to find flights to various cities that had similar departure times.

Two of the suspects recently traveled to Pakistan and later received money wired from there, senior U.S. government sources said.

Among those arrested were a Muslim charity worker and a Heathrow Airport employee with an all-area access pass, according to Britain's Channel 4.

The suspects were planning to stage a test run within a couple of days, said a U.S. intelligence official.

I don't know if that would take down a jet. Now, if they used hydrogen peroxide, citric acid, and hexamine.... HMDT. Big bada boom.

Why assume that ALL of the terrorists know how to make this apparently novel explosive?

Like isolated Islamofacist supporters (perhaps in Norman OK), who may need the information to act independently?

If a major news outlet publishes the info far and wide, I bet it reaches people who do not now have it, some of whom may choose to act on it.

You have expressed a desire to learn how to synthesize and potentially use a high explosive (in a public forum no less!), admitting that you don't have the formula right now but you'd like to get it. Could there not be a few others like you, willing to act?

And what if one or twenty of the people who get the information don't live where there are a bunch of stumps?

I think that information that the enemy can exploit should remain under wraps. The mall it saves could be your own.

Ok, it was a TATP peroxide mixture. There is a thread on FR right now explaining the US involvement in the operation. TATP I understand is very volatile and quite capable of taking severely damaging an airliner.

If the rats weren't so concerned it would have energized this nation, they would like to see them succeed. So instead, once again, they jumped on the blame us first bandwagon in step saying Iraq policies caused it. As if they hadn't declared war on us years ago. I am spitting angry.

Actually, it is pretty easy to make a lot of high explosives from readily available household chemicals. The problem is not in the manufacture, but knowing how to handle and store them. I'd suspect most people would blow themselves up trying to make something from such crude sources. And the info is readily available on the internet, and most chemists could do it in their sleep. In the case of HMDT, the precursor hexamine is likely to be picked up by a trained dog. The danger of hydrogen peroxide is that it is odorless.

Look, everyone knows that to blow up a mall you need diesel and fertilizer...

That said, I see your point. No need to educate the aspiring jihadi in Norman, or Tacoma for that matter.

http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/pubs/program/sotf/appendixa.htm

It already is watched, by DEA.

And the peroxide explosives are watched by BATFE.

Triacetone triperoxide. Hoo-boy.... bold fellows. It is formed in chem labs by accident - usually when you store incompatible (won't say which ones) reagents together and get a spill.

Do these people think we are stupid or what?

...as a matter of fact, yeah, that is what they think. ... and then we have Connecticut confirming that for them.

"the motive"You are absolutely correct sir. All symbols, all books and all teachers associated with the death cult need to be eliminated. Worldwide.

The only difference today is that now they're alleging that Joe Lieberman is part of the plot against Democrats..

Kudos for saying so clearly what so many are thinking ... why the hell do we allow the mullah madrasses to continue churning out the hatebots?

They used a peroxide two part solution. Exactly what the other part was they haven't said.

Acetone (nail polish remover) perhaps? See TATP, known among sand nazis as Mother of Satan because of its propensity to cause "work accidents".  But a work accident high over the North Atlantic might work just as well as proper explosive preparation.

A bunch of kids could read, not from the Web, but from the "respected" CNN, how to make explosives, and the TV will stress how goshdarned EASY it is.

If they get a nitroguanidine recipe from some usenet post, they may think it's cool, and do nothing. But a talking head who tells them to mix A and B from the hardware store and beauty shop will be a stronger stimulus.

TV is a more powerful medium. I feel it carries more weight than a scanned-in copy of The Cookbook. Lots of kids get hurt attempting stunts from some show, is it Jackass?

We are at war, why broadcast terror recipes far and wide?

Somehow an image of Dan Rather explaining how to make Thermite from an old ladder and rusty car comes to mind....

You must do more than merely mix two liquids to get TATP, unless they have cooked up something new.

For example, the kid in Norman OK had a bunch of stuff including a crockpot in his lab gear.
