Realistically speaking, what would it take to eliminate the IRS and institute a Fair Tax? They aren't going to change the tax code just because 55,000 out of 300,000,000 Americans sign a petition.
The number of Fair Tax supporters is 700,000 and growing. I suggest you visit
The Americans For Fair Taxation website to get the correct information regarding the Fair Tax.

I'll join the cynics. What's my incentive to sign up for the Fair Tax if I make $40,000, not paying much in taxes, and my democrat senator is telling me how he's sticking it to the rich to pay for various entitlements that are directed toward me?
Democracy works until the poor realize that they can vote themselves rich people's money.

The number of Fair Tax supporters is 700,000 and growingHow do they know that each of these 700,000 is a different person, and of course its growing, no one is ever removed from the email list of cumulative "supporters".
More than likely there are less than 50,000 people out there who strongly support this hare-brained plan, and most of them think they're gonna get a bunch more money if this were to pass. If they knew the truth that there is no Free Lunch, they'd likely find another cause to fill their free time.
We'll see how close this petition gets to 700,000 since I'm sure that they are sending a note to all of their "supporters".

I have visited the website before. OK, let me rephrase the question. Realistically speaking, what would it take to eliminate the IRS and institute the Fair Tax? They aren't going to change the tax code just because even 700,000 citizens sign a petition. I'm not sure they'd change it if 7 million signed it.
