Tuscola County prosecutors filed terrorism-related charges Saturday against three men who they say bought dozens of cell phones Friday in Caro in a globally coordinated plot involving the Mackinac Bridge.

They charged brothers Adham Abdelhamid Othman, 21, and Louai Abdelhamied Othman, 23, along with their cousin, Maruan Awad Muhareb, 18, with identical counts of collecting material to support terrorist acts and surveillance of a vulnerable target with intent to committ terrorism.

these jerks would never get close to it.

One would hope, but I often fear that PC has us afraid to ask questions or stop people when we should. Even when someone gets killed, like the Jewish woman here in Seattle, the libs are busy blaming the mental health system or whatever, instead of saying that it was a terrorist attack.

So you worked on the Mackinac, did you? You never cease to amaze me with your work history!

Traditionally led by the Governor.

'Course, this year that's still Mother Granholm (D-Canada), but even so...

We should just make it quite plain that we're ethnically profiling, and that EVERYONE should, or that they must even if they don't want to.

Alas, I guess a bunch of people will have to die, first...

At that point, we will literally be DYING for multiculturalism, even if we aren't eager for it...

After all them are disabled, they should only be reenabled after the owners personally go to a cell phone store or service outlet and present valid photo ID, verified addresses, bank accounts and submit a thumb print.

What a load of political nonsense!!! There are probably thousands of devices that could be used to trigger an explosive. Next you will be suggesting that a valid photo ID, bank account information, address and thumb print be required to post on Free Republic.

If you're that insecure perhaps you should find a secure closet to hind in.

President Bush should immediately order all anonymously held cell phones disabled.

Are you for real? Since when can the Executive branch rule by decree? Oh right. It is good when a "Republican" abuses power. How conservative is that?

These buyers have a friend or hundred that fit the terrorist profile to the T.

What are you talking about? Terrorists could be anybody. They could be 3 year old boys or 85 year old grand mothers. They can't be "profiled".

so your plan is to have the national guard at every possible location? that will do wonders for their regular jobs, or perhaps we can all work for the government - oh but then we would be right back to everyone reporting what they see - just like the store clerk did.

Lack of logic is not a boost to your argument.

the Liberal Arts College of your alma mata would come rallying and rioting to their defense.

Sad to say, you might be right. Lord knows I rallied and rioted a lot in A2 as an undergrad - even took part in a sit in at the President's office.

The main cable anchorages of the Mackinac bridge are a long way from either shore. They are huge concrete blocks setting on the bottom. The saboteurs would have to cross several approach spans to get to the anchorage. The anchorages on the Golden Gate bridge are at the waters edge. It would be a major job to place enough explosive to part the main suspension cables of the Mackinac bridge.

none of those remote detonator type of devices are as easy to use as an anonymous activated cell phone purchased for cash.

and in addition to the detonator angle - these phones can be used for communications, also in an untraceable manner.

Reallly scary + depressing to think we are in fact relying more on Walmart clerks than on the freaking FBI for our national security.

Well to be fair, I imagine would-be terrorists are probably just a tad more discreet when around FBI agents then when they're interacting with Walmart clerks...

'Course that's just me guessing, maybe you're right, maybe the FBI can be everyplace in this country and can see every interaction, and its just their incompetence that prevents them from doing so.

The President is the Commander in Chief of the armed forces. He would be well within his constitutional powers to order cell phones to be disabled if they constituted a threat to the security of the US.

" two Dearborn 20-year-olds are facing terrorism-related charges after authorities found large amounts of cash and a dozen cell phones in their vehicle in Marietta, Ohio. Family members have said the men are victims of profiling."

Well, I guess you could say that the 600 phones in their van was dozens??

Does anyone seriously believe that if this was such a big terrorist plot that a local county prosecutor would be handling it?

somwhere in the FCC code (they control the licenses the carriers use after all) - there is likely some legal means to accomplish this to your satisfaction.

We have been talking about these phones on FR for months. People have been reporting. The Feds know. Suddenly there is a sense of urgency though.
