Britain's Al-Qaeda leader seized

SECURITY sources believe that a man arrested in last weeks anti- terror raids in Britain is Al-Qaedas leader in this country.
Home Office officials say that one of those arrested is suspected not only of masterminding the foiled plot to bring down up to nine transatlantic airliners, but also of involvement in other planned atrocities over the past few years.
They believe that he was instrumental in sending the ringleader of at least one previous British terror plot for training at a camp in Pakistan last year. He is described by counter-terrorist officials at MI5 as the senior figure in a British terror network involving Kashmiri, north African and Iraqi cells.
Scotland Yard believes that the plan to bring down airliners involved up to 20 terrorists who were planning to smuggle liquid bomb components in hand luggage onto nine British and American passenger jets.

The thwarting of the alleged plot has, however, failed to quash continuing fears among counter-terrorist experts. Senior security officials have briefed ministers that a second phase of attacks may be about to be launched.Thats not encouraging.

The Al-Qaeda leader who cannot be named for legal reasons acts as a suspected hub in a network of extremist groups. These include Kashmiri and north African groups based in this country. He is linked to a second suspect also in Britain who has played a major role in facilitating support for the Iraq jihad.
A third associate is an Iraqi who came to Britain in 2004 and worked on providing support for British extremists who wanted to travel to Iraq to fight the holy war.
MI5 said he acquired weapons in preparation for an unspecified attack in Britain. He was detained in January last year pending deportation to Iraq.
The British leaders suspected links with other Al-Qaeda figures in Pakistan have been the subject of intense MI5 scrutiny since last August. >>>>>>>>>>>> MI5 must've been watching him every moment for the past year. Awesome work.

He may lose a few percentage points in the polls for his campaign for a seat in the US House. What district you ask? The Democrats will fill that in later.

You know, even though the British police seem to lack something of what I will describe as "street toughness," they really are very good at the investigative side of law enforcement. My hat's off to them on this entire story.
Yes; I say there, well-done chaps!

UK has strict laws regarding pre-trial publicity so expect some news to dry up for a while as charges are prepared by prosecutors. In fact the MSM has been asked already to limit speculation etc, hence the Times' woolly references.
Good ol' (lefty) Mirror has no such scruples, gives a name to "Mr Big".
P.S. "Brum" = Birmingham, England.
Pakistani officials who grabbed Rauf in Karachi on Wednesday following a tip-off from the UK knew him under his alias of Maitur Rehman.
"Rehman" is alleged to be a Al-Q biggie, other reports do not claim he's the same guy as Rauf.

Who is most likely to be the British Al-Qaeda Leader ?
Could it be Shamin Mohammed Uddin ?
He's almost 36 and is the oldest of those currently arrested.
To: 1066AD
Yeah I've read about Rauf last couple of days:
Probe Into Air Plot Focuses on Brothers Sunday, August 13, 2006 By ROBERT BARR LONDON - The investigation into a plot to blow up jetliners over the Atlantic zeroed in Saturday on brothers arrested in Pakistan and Britain, one named as a key al-Qaida suspect who left the family's home in England years ago and the other described as gentle and polite.
British authorities, meanwhile, warned against complacency, saying the detention of several dozen suspects had not eliminated the danger. The terror threat level in Britain remained "critical" _ its highest designation _ and delays, flight cancellations and intense security continued to greet travelers at London airports.
"No one should be under any illusion that the threat ended with the recent arrests. It didn't," Home Secretary John Reid told police chiefs at a breakfast meeting. "All of us know that this investigation hasn't ended."

That would be my guess, as well. But who knows? Nothing about these damed Islamonazis is what we would consider to be "normal". It could be someone in his late 20s, just as easily.

"The brothers all work in the family's baking and confectionery business, run by their 52-year-old father Abdul.
Lock-up garages belonging to the business were among buildings raided by police."

You never know if your neighborhood baker is a terrorist.
It's amazing, they blend into society, while planning to destroy it.
And I bet the ACLU would tell us how horrible it is to monitor the phones of this innocent baker family.

Indeed they can be Atchafalaya. And even more than they, the Brits are one of the most devious people on earth. Just study intelligence in the Second World War to see the truth. The Coventry Secret (not evacuating before the bombing because it might reveal they knew the code), the decoy of the body of the "fake diplomat" washing ashore in Spain before the invasion of Sicily carrying papers saying it was going to be a landing in France, the "phony army" under Patton's command sending meaningless radio signals prior to D-Day to convince the Gerries that the Pas de Calais was the real target, and on and on.
I have no doubt that when we learn the full truth of this operation we're going to see some more creative thinking on their part.

To: SleekMaid
This is pretty funny - in yesterday's Wall Street Journal, the story from the UK was that the officials didn't even think this was an Al Queda plot and the Americans were jumping the gun!
But perhaps those laws concerning pre-trial preparations were a problem.
