NEW YORK Gannett reported on Friday that total pro forma revenue for July increased 1.2% due mostly to growth in its domestic community newspapers and broadcast division.
Newspaper advertising revenue grew slightly, up 0.5% compared with the same period a year ago. The company said there was a slight decrease in Run of Press (ROP) volume and a 1.3% decline in preprint distribution.
Local advertising revenue was up 1.8% on a 0.9% increase in ROP ad volume. Small and medium-sized advertisers outpaced the company's larger advertisers.
Classified revenue rose 1.1% on a 0.3% decrease in ROP ad volume. Within the category, real estate was up 10.5% while employment and automotive was down 5.4% and 9.7% respectively. In the U.S. only, classified revenue was up 0.6%. Real estate increased 12.1%. Employment declined 3.8% and automotive dropped 7.1%.
National advertising advanced 1.7% on a 9.1% decline in ad volume. At its domestic papers, national volume dropped 9.6%. At USA Today, ad revenue grew 2.7% on a decline in paid ad pages to 338 from 355.
Circulation revenue slipped 1.9%.
Ping
yeeeeeeeeeeee hawwww
Yup. People are learning that it is better to advertise employment opportunities on Monster.com, and that it is better to sell your car on eBay or AutoTrader. (among other places)
When the price of a classified ad exceeds $50 for just a couple of lines, as it does in most papers now, people turn to other alternatives.
Nope. And their poor performance in the stock market reflects that future...
"National advertising advanced 1.7% on a 9.1% decline in ad volume"
Sounds like they may have had a large increase in the price of ads. If so that will turn around and bite them rather hard these days.
I think I told you they started giving us FREE Thursday papers even though we are only Sunday subscribers. In addition, we have started getting free papers on every holiday and after every Speedway race. They must be doing that in order to keep antsy advertisers.
The ONLY reson I take the Sunday paper is for the sale brochures. This Sunday's headline was "Not Good Enough" about how unhappy the black population is in Indianapolis. Gannett papers never miss an opportunity to stir up trouble and make everyone unhappy.
Some of us do, occasionally or when we're looking for something in classifieds that we haven't been able to find online (about never). Or when we want to see what Fry's Electronics has on sale this week.
The last regular contact most of us had with newspapers was in school when we were required to use them.
Gee, I'm all broke up about it (cackle).
Miss Marple, the Dinosaur fish wrap industry is being hit with so many changes beyond their control. Very few will survive these Winds of Change.
Then, throw in their left wing arrogance with their hatred of GW and what is right in America with at least 50% of the population. They have angered us and turned us off. They are lost in a Hate GW Quagmire for 6 years.
Next, throw in their obsession with making news instead of reporting it to turn off more people.
Last but not least, add in their belief that they are the only smart/intelligent people in America and the rest of us are red necked dummies.
All of the above factors will eliminate most of the current dinosaur fish wraps in the next 5-10 years.
These are "targeted distributions" wherein advertisers pay newspapers to distribute the paper to a certain area, to reach a certain consumer base (even though those consumers are not newspaper subscribers and are not in the regular circulation base).
This gets tricky. Newspapers must be careful how they account for circulations. LI's Newsday got into big legal trouble by faking circulation numbers (which affects the cost of ads).

The basic corporate culture of most Dinosaur Fishwraps is one of lying to subscribers and advertisers to push agendas of the left instead printing news.
Any advertiser, who believes the circulation numbers of any Dinosaur fishwrap, is very stupid.
Needs repeating.
"Any advertiser, who believes the circulation numbers of any Dinosaur fishwrap, is ..."
I still get, many years later, offers to renew. It does not work.
They try lots of ways : fake bills, free stuff...
They are causing many trees to be cut down for their wasted pulp.
