Fauxtography: The Media Scandal Continues
townhall.com ^ | 8/16/06 | Michelle Malkin

Posted on 08/16/2006 3:52:11 AM PDT by beyond the sea

It's the story that the journalistic elite would rather just go away. In the aftermath of Reuters' admission that one of its photographers, Adnan Hajj, had manipulated two war images from Lebanon after bloggers smoked out his crude Photoshop alterations, and all 920 of his Reuters photos were pulled, evidence of far more troubling photo staging and media deception in the Middle East continues to pour in.

Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs (littlegreenfootballs.com) calls it "fauxtography."

Reuters on Sunday withdrew an image of smoke rising from burning buildings after an Israeli air strike on the suburbs of Beirut on August 5, 2006 after evidence emerged that it had been manipulated to show more smoke. The manipulated image is shown on the left. The unaltered image, shown on the right, has since run. Reuters has told the photographer, freelance Adnan Hajj, that the agency will not use any more of his pictures

One of Hajj's photos was an iconic image of a dusty dead child with a clean blue pacifier clipped to his shirt, paraded by a corpse handler at the site of an Israeli airstrike in Qana, Lebanon. Mainstream journalists have sneered at bloggers' suspicions, first raised at EU Referendum (eureferendum.blogspot.com), that some of the gruesome photos from that scene may have been staged. Washington Post photographer Michael Robinson-Chavez, who was at Qana, huffed: "Everyone was dead, many of them children. Nothing was set up." But last week, a German television station aired damning video footage from the scene showing a lead propaganda director (dubbed the "Green Helmet Guy") positioning a young boy's corpse, yanking it from an ambulance, placing it on two different stretchers for the cameras and pushing bystanders out of the way for clearer shots.

Washington Post photographer Michael Robinson-Chavez, who was at Qana, huffed: "Everyone was dead, many of them children. Nothing was set up."

And the we get the truth from German media.

Jefferson Morely of the Washington Compost sneered about the internet sources questioning the Qana photos.

BOTTOM LINE: The Washington Post doesn't know it's ass from first base.

People buy the paper to read the news. Once they understand that the a paper does not report the news, there is no reason to buy it. The Washington Post is diging it's own grave.

The Reuters caption reads: "Lebanese civil defence personnel carry a body in the town of Ghandouriyeh in south Lebanon August 15, 2006. REUTERS/Ammar Awad"

Reader William Ketchem's caption reads: "Awful skinny body and no feet!" Whatever the case, it seems that the Reuters caption is not entirely self-explanatory.

Not only that, but the guy on the left looks like he's exerting almost no effort. Two guys carrying a litter with any kind of normal-sized person is a lot of effort, especially over rough terrain.

Mathew Brady posed corpses at Gettysburg for dramatic effect. The famous Vietnamese girl fleeing a "napalm attack" was actually injured in a cooking accident. The Iwo Jima photograph was a "do over". I figure well over half the MSM media photos from any disaster or war are posed or staged.

The napalm girl grew up and I saw her in an interview and she said it was napalm.
She should know, no?

"after evidence emerged that it had been manipulated to show more smoke."

He added more smoke? That's it? Get a grip, people. Now, if he photoshopped in smoke where there was none ... well, THAT'S a story.

(Actually, it looks as though he zoomed in on the darker one.)

How about these?

"The image was altered by TIME illustrator Matt Mahurin, who later stated that the darkening of Simpson's skin was to 'make it more artful, more compelling'."

He kept his job.

The Iwo Jima photograph was a "do over".

Get the facts straight. The Rosenthal photo was not a "do over". It was a photo of the raising of a larger, second flag on top of Mt. Sirubachi. There was nothing faked about the photo.

For those interested in the story of the flag raising, and the Marines and Navy Corpsman that raised it, get "Flags Our Fathers". It documents the lives of the 6 flag raisers before and after the photo, as well as how the Rosenthal photo became an enduring national symbol.

Michael Heer (sp?) in dispatches says it was a cooking accident. In any event, the planes dropping napalm in that area at that time were South Vietnamese.

She may well be in Elian Gonzales mode, where her prospects are tied to her ability to stick to a story.

Half the truth is often a great lie. Benjamin Franklin
It is never possible to tell the whole truth; the field of view of your camera is selected and the time the picture is taken is selected. Once you have made those decisions you have embedded your own perspective in the story.

Civilians were intentionally being injured and killed in Israel by indiscriminate rocket bombardment by Hezbolla - but you were in Lebanon being taken on a guided tour of civilian casualties which were accidents from the POV of the Israelis but intended by the Hezzies who were using them for human shields. The very fact that you were in Lebanon at all under those conditions speaks volumes about your perspective.

Newsflash: You are the tools being used.
Your presence in Lebanon changed the reality in Lebanon. The prospect of your presence in Lebanon change the reality there for the worse, since it was the hope that you would publish photos and eve fauxtos of Lebanese civilian casualties which motivated Hezbolla to keep civilians near their rocket launchers. Not change reality? You killed people.

The fact that you preferentially report bad news means that you are bad news. You presume to define the public interest, yet you yourself are one of the worst special interests out there.

Bingo!

Hey, I have a clue for you. Don't believe anything anyone with the last name of "Hajj" tells you about the middle east, jews, terrorists, islam or military issues.

This dude has been to Mecca.

Anyone who in the world who has "Hajj" as part of their name either has a parent who has crawled to that black cube in Mecca, or has done the deed themselves.

That's what it means, and it's pretty hardcore.

Muslims are our enemy, and you should learn all you can about them.

Just another isolated incident....

But enough "isolated incidents" make for a certain degree of malicious aforethought.
