In an interview, Young was asked whether he was concerned that Wal-Mart causes smaller, mom-and-pop stores to close.
``Well, I think they should; they ran the 'mom and pop' stores out of my neighborhood,'' the paper quoted Young as saying. ``But you see, those are the people who have been overcharging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables. And they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs; very few black people own these stores.''
Young said he decided to end his involvement with Working Families for Wal-Mart after he started getting calls about the story.
``Things that are matter-of-fact in Atlanta, in the New York and Los Angeles environment, tend to be a lot more volatile,'' he said.
The Jewish community criticized Young's comments.
``Andrew Young is a nationally known civil rights leader. If anyone should know that these are the words of bigotry, anti-Semitism and prejudice, it's him,'' said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. ``I know he apologized, but I would say this: ... During his years as a leader of the national civil rights movement, if anyone would utter remarks like this about African-Americans, his voice would be the first to rise in indignation.''

Joe, contrast the treatment Andrew Young will receive over his remarks as opposed to the $hitstorm Tramm Hudson faces.
Andy Young blurted out a truth: "...very few black people own these stores."
Yeah, gee, Andy, why is that? Why can Korean and Arab immigrants come here with little, barely know the language and open and build up businesses, but millions of American born blacks can't (even in their own neighborhoods)?

I tell you what, when I read that Juan Williams article I like to fell out of my chair. I never thought he'd come around.
They won't go after Young. They'll go after Wal-Mart. They'll say "a Wal-Mart spokesman made remarks regarded as anti-Semitic".

Unfortunately blacks have a reputation of being bigoted toward other ethnic groups.
I was once overseas and an Asian-American woman went on a little rant about the bigotry and discrimination in the States. I was wondering whom she was talking about, since most of the Asians I know seem to get along pretty well. Turned out (almost as a punch line) that she was talking about the bigotry she'd experienced from black Americans.
My wife who is Asian has also experienced it, as have her many friends and business associates.
It is quite distinct and obvious, and something they normally don't experience from any other ethnic group.
Sorry, that's the ugly truth.

Those stores are limited as to the suppliers that will deliver to them. Those suppliers charge more, not just because there is less competition but because they have to. While a normal delivery can be one man on the truck, these need two. It's also not a popular run.
The stores themselves pay a bleep-load for insurance, if they can get it, and need more security type stuff. Needless to say, their "shrinkage" is very high as well.
The stores have to be small because usually its just the owning family working there. Hiring would be problematic, to say the least.
The real root problem is street crime, but it's politically much easier to demagogue the store owners.

Can someone get in his face, get him to say what he is really wants to say? We need some clarity.
I hate that "look at all the non-black owned stores in black neighborhoods" whine. There is nothing preventing black people from opening their own little grocery stores. Interestingly enough, a black writer who writes a column for my local newspaper on the formerly black area of town (where she grew up) was writing about all the disappeared little stores of that area.
In the 1950s, during the height of ugly Southern segregation, there were many small black-owned businesses, ranging from grocery stores to dry cleaners and garages. For some reason, after the fall of segregation when it became possible for people to shop elsewhere, these black-owned businesses disappeared. With the coming of big supermarkets and chains, a lot of small white-owned businesses disappeared, too, but many white small-shop owners moved on to other more specialized shops or some other phase of retailing. Blacks don't seem to have done that, or perhaps it was because the generation that came along after these people was already being hollowed out by welfare and the 1970's sex-and-drugs mentality (which had a serious effect on the struggling black community, and was not just a passing fad the way it was for middle class white kids). Maybe there was no one after the "business generation" wanting to continue their father's store or garage.
Please post the name of the agency and the specific program which accomplishes this. While you're at it, please post the section of the Internal Revenue Code that exempts immigrants from income tax for two to five years after they come to the US.
These things are becoming urban legends because "everybody knows a guy who's cousin's neighbor saw it first hand". I'm not saying it isn't so, but I'd like to see some proof.
Might I suggest that its because they have bought into a culture that defines other people's individual success as "ripping someone else off".
The proplem is not race. It's the culture.
Oh you mean they invested lots of SWEAT in trying to improve their lot in life rather than sitting on their fat rear ends, leeching off the hard work of others (WELFARE).
