Plan to let illegal immigrants apply for driver's licenses is shelved again
Mercury News ^ | Aug. 18, 2006 | Edwin Garcia

This was the seventh time in seven years that Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, had tried to pass the measure, which would establish a special license for the state's more than 2 million undocumented immigrants who, according to estimates, are driving.

His most recent efforts have been passed by the Legislature only to be vetoed by Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gray Davis. This time, the bill was shot down by a Democratic-controlled committee.

Political insiders suggested the measure was perhaps too controversial for an election year. The bill is opposed by Republicans -- and a majority of voters -- who say licenses would reward people in violation of immigration law.

Republican Schwarzenegger, who is running for re-election, has said he would veto the bill. His Democratic opponent, state Treasurer Phil Angelides, supports the measure.

It isn't just California.

You and me are just cogs in the machine of the global economy.

Citizens and illegal aliens are equal on their economic spreadsheet.

Pass the bill, and when the illegal aliens go to the DMV to apply for the license, arrest and deport them.

Now you are a mindreader?

Didn't you read the article, this was the SEVENTH time Cedillo tried to get it passed and signed?

Just a feeling. I think after the election he will come up with a compromise to get illegal aliens liceses. Of course they could just accept the Mexican ID as a valid license but who knows what the future holds?

What's with these mentally-ill morons in The Peoples' Republik of Kali-forni-kate?

You have liberals in PA too. If your state was a border state full of illegals, your liberals would be advocating the same thing.

Give tham a "special license."

One with a chip in it that give them an unstoppable urge to go to Mexico and stay there. (If only there was such a chip.)

Okay, I'll bite.

A comprehensive immigration bill out of Congress would not likely bolster existing law, but erode it. Dems may be the minority, up there, but they have several jello-brained RINOS ready and willing to vote with them to sabotage the interests of "We, The People", which is how we ended up with such radically different House and Senate bills.

That's the short answer.

Yeah, I agree with you that the status quo sucks, but anything Congress would be likely to do has slim-to-no chance of actually improving the situation. I'd far rather simply see GWB sign an Executive Order affirming the necessity to actively and fully enforce existing immigration law at all levels of government from the Federal to the local.

Actually, more than that, I'd rather see all levels of government from the Federal to the local actively and fully enforce existing immigration law WITHOUT any input from Washington.

Bravo on excellent discernment.

Fair: Here's a good chance to tell us what brought on this deviation from your usual scathing attacks on those who feel our country is worth defending.

"what brought on this deviation"

This is not a deviation -- you shouldn't believe all the lies some people spread about me.

I don't know that I'd consider it a "deviation". As I read post 11, F.O. opines that a "reasonable bill" would be preferable to the status quo. That opinion doesn't express that the country isn't worth defending, it simply states that another method of defense, vis-a-vis a "reasonable bill", could be better.

I, for one, would be intereseted in seeing F.O.'s opinion as to what would constitute such a "reasonable bill", along with a credible rationale for a scenario in which such a bill might actually survive both houses of Congress and get signed into law by President Bush.

My own sense of the situation is that any bill "We, The People" would REALLY like -- a bill that would definitely improve the situation -- MIGHT get throught the House, would get destroyed in the Senate, and, if by some Divine Intervention it DID pass the Senate, this President would refuse to sign it.

Heh heh. I didn't say I agreed with her, just noting that she didn't dump a truckload of "party over country" as usual.

For the record: I back HR 4437, Rep. Norwood's CLEAR Act that clears local law enforcement officers to arrest illegals on immigration charges and (once and for all) making English the Official Language of the United States.

Unpopularly, I believe that we need to implement a national ID card that stays ahead of forgery technology (thus ruining the fake document industry) and making the IRS and SSI databases available to law enforcement. ICE needs to double it's personnel working inland (for starters) while the ACLU, MALDEF, and La Raza are put on the defensive with charges of treason.
