Clinton Faces Rocky Path In Iraq Crisis By Craig Staats/AllPolitics

WASHINGTON (Feb. 18) -- In preparing the nation for a possible war with Iraq, President Bill Clinton faces a series of obstacles, including a skeptical Congress and less international backing than President George Bush enjoyed during 1991 Persian Gulf War.

So far, Clinton has the public's backing: two-thirds of the nation approves of how he is handling the crisis, according to the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll.

But that can't obscure the fact that the United States appears ready to strike at Saddam Hussein's rogue state without any unanimity of opinion on what the goal of an attack should be.

Should the U.S. merely try to punish Hussein for his latest intransigence over U.N. weapons inspections? Should it try to seriously diminish his ability to develop weapons of mass destruction? Should it actually try to topple his regime?

In his speech at the Pentagon Tuesday, Clinton laid out a modest goal: diminish the Iraqi threat. That probably is within the United States' reach, but it's no answer for the long term, and it's less ambitious than some earlier administration pronouncements.

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear," Clinton said. "We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program. We want to seriously reduce his capacity to threaten his neighbors."

After the quagmire of Vietnam, Americans deserve the clearest possible explanation of the reasons and objectives for war whenever the nation edges toward one.

This is his best quote:

Funny how you can replace "Clinton" with "Bush" and the story seems exactly the same. Yet the way the media "forgets" news it seems like journalism started on January of 2001

The media doesn't so much report news as it "manages" news -- in order to achieve the desired outcome.

The MSM is worse than worthless and no longer serves a useful purpose -- except to employ those who would be otherwise unemployable.

That would make a neat topic for a doctoral dissertation. With almost a boundless amount of resource material from which to choose. A good title, Modern Media, the Manipulation of Reality and the Self-fufilling Prophesy.

Oh, the media does not "forget news". They just count on the fact that the sheople of this country uses only short-term memory and/or does not pay attention long enough to understand what is going on in the world outside of their own yards.

There are plenty of Clinton "gems" all of which he is vehemently speaking against now in order to play politics in favor of his possession of the right hand, Hillary. For example, we have Bubba saying: " We will stand mighty for peace and freedom, and maintain a strong defense against terror and destruction. Our children will sleep free from the threat of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons. Ports and airports, farms and factories will thrive with trade and innovation and ideas. And the world's greatest democracy will lead a whole world of democracies."

What changed Bubba? Why do you no longer stand against terrorism? Is it because you are chasing votes for your estranged wife from the Islamic community?

Bubba said:" Today, a generation raised in the shadows of the Cold War assumes new responsibilities in a world warmed by the sunshine of freedom but threatened still by ancient hatreds and new plagues. Raised in unrivaled prosperity, we inherit an economy that is still the world's strongest..."

Thanks to the Republican government before you. Sadly, Clntonian policies destroyed that advantage as the Bubba admin ignored those who threatened the nation, collaborated with and sold our secrets to others who want to weaken and destry it. At the end of the Bubba admin, our economy was in shambles, and it took a Republican again to send it soaring to new heights, despite the huge problems left behind by the President who did all his thinking with his little head.

Bubba said: " It is time to break the bad habit of expecting something for nothing: from our government, or from each other. Let us all take more responsibility, not only for ourselves and our families, but for our communities and our country."

It seems to be Democrat policy to encourage it's supporters to expect the government to do everything for them. This is an example of a blatant LIE, a pretty speech made with fingers crossed behind his back. It has been and still is the goal of the RAT party to make the people Dependant on government for all their needs. Nothing has made this more clear than the RAT party's attack on the Bush Admin. for not doing everything for those too lazy to help themselves, a culture created by the Democrat party's nanny state, bif government babysitter policies.

I heard a AOL poll cited on Fox the other day. Only 42 percent of the respondents could name the three branches of Government, yet 72 percent could name The Three Stooges.

Ah, but how many J-schools would accept such a subject for study?

More likely chasing money from the Saudis...

You know, it is a truth that ALL politicians are facing a rocky path over the Itraq War issue, not just Clinton. And if the path gets REcky enough for all, then all the better.

Why?

Thats what it will take to form a bi-partisan policy on Iraq and the extended battle against Islamofascism. We need a policy that was similarly bi-partisan during the cold war.

So I am glad the pols are sweating Iraq, McCain is shiving back and forth, Clinton is waxing Leiberman-like one moment and Deaniacal the next.

Sooner or later there will have to be a bi-partisan agreement on what the threat is and how it should be consistently handled over a 50 or even a 100 year period.

The rockier the road, the better!

Pat Robertson's Regent University has a School of Journalism. That might be a good start.

I don't buy the idea that the Clinton White House would seriously consider war with Iraq. When they had Sandy Berger running the National Security Council? Please.

Yes, I heard about the same poll. Makes sense, given that our education system has resorted to leaving out the most important lessons (such as U.S. Goverment and History). Thankfully, with my own children I did not leave history lessons up to the school system. My wife and I made sure that our four children also learned that which is important in a free society. Now I'm helping my 7 year old granddaughter to know the truth as we watch the news, the History Channel, CSPAN, etc.
