Republicans for Lieberman? (No mention that Lieberman is leading)

CHICAGO -- Connecticut was the talk of Chicago this past weekend, at least as far as the assembled Democratic establishment was concerned. At their annual summer meeting in the Windy City, the party's national committee focused on some controversial 2008 business and on preparations for a hard-fought 2006 fall campaign season. But many members had their minds on the odd set of circumstances in Connecticut which have Republicans backing Democrats' own incumbent senator, Joe Lieberman, while the party's establishment supports nominee Ned Lamont.

So sure was the GOP that Lieberman's Senate seat would be out of their reach that they didn't try to prevent a virtual unknown with a problematic history of gambling from claiming their nomination. Since the primary and Lieberman's decision to seek re-election as an independent, Republicans have determined that they can gain more politically by supporting Lieberman and casting him as the victim of an anti-war, liberal-dominated Democratic party than they can gain from backing their own candidate, Alan Schlesinger. So uniform is their support for Lieberman that Schlesinger received only 4% in a recent poll.

What are these Dems going to say when Connecticut voters reject Ned Lament and his whacky out-of-the-mainstream view with the War On Terror????

I think Joe Lieberman is a pandering mushmouthed opportunist. (Rusmfeld should resign?)

I still want him to win. Just to give the kos klan and the moron.org types another fat lip.

If Joe Lieberman wins the Senate election in November, with which side will he caucus ... the Dimms, who didn't support him and rejected him, or the Republicans, who supported him?

If he wins the Dems will cater to him, all will be forgiven, and he will reject the Republicans who helped him keep his seat. You heard it here first.

I'd have to agree with you. For Libs, history begins when they wake up in the morning.

You may be right Tedster...I think if Lieberman wins as an (I) he immediately switches back to (D). I hope Conn. Republicans vote for Schlesinger (R). Lieberman is a Liberal for life despite some rhetoric about the WOT. He is a non-factor for the GOP so vote (R) in Conn.

I fear you're correct.
I suppose the issue becomes one of who wins the Senate. If the Republicans retain control (even without Joe's support), AND if the fight is REALLY nasty between him and the Dim candidate with a bunch of Dim senators coming out in favor of Joe's opponent and not Joe, AND if Kerry ends up being the Dim Nominee for Prez again (that's a possibility, you know), the struggle might be too harsh for Joe to "forgive."
I'll believe it when I see it -- but I think it IS a possibility. Particularly if the Dims are as nasty as we know they can be.

I disagree. The dem's have been very nasty to lil' Joe.

I predict Joe will be a left leaning independant who will now vote more often with republicans than he used to.
