Kyoto, California
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 8/22/2006 | EDITORIAL

Posted on 08/22/2006 6:55:44 PM PDT by calcowgirl

If you live in any state but California, this might be a good time to prepare for the arrival of new businesses. The Golden State's politicians think they're going to lead the world again.

All they think they need to do from Sacramento is command the planet's climate to cease that infernal warming we've heard so much about. What they'll end up doing is command people to live in much more primitive ways.

Unless these politicians actually want to expel entrepreneurs, most businesses are expected to stay home and perform obediently under a new regulatory regime. Some even expect that, under new legislation known as Assembly Bill 32, ... a new generation of small, green businesses will multiply. Why, they might even bring Big Oil to its knees.

The thinking, endorsed by the state's political class, its ever-trendy academics and its leading media, goes like this: Global warming is a crisis demanding emergency action. The Bush administration, having rejected the Kyoto agreement to reduce fuel emissions to Third World levels, simply won't do the enlightened thing.

So it's time for California, being the font of popular culture and political wisdom, to seize the initiative and do to the world's sixth-largest economy exactly what its lagging competitors want it to do.

And if you're thinking all these overheated Democrats might be thwarted by a cooler Republican governor, think again.

Arnold Schwarzenegger already has approved of the general objective. Offering modest modifications in a bill by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, he's agreed that the state must enforce the emissions standards of 1990 by 2020.

...The state chamber of commerce figures the legislation could reduce energy supplies by 17%.

...theirs is a fool's errand... The more direct impact: higher energy costs, a grinding economy and a more Spartan lifestyle.

The Golden State's politicians think they're going to lead the world again.

Remember the mandated electric cars? General Motors should have sued them.

and a more Spartan lifestyle.

Except the sword and shield have to be left at home. You can't carry them around public without violation of state weapons laws. The rest of the outfit will fit right in with a gay pride parade.

I've talked to several libs who really think that the key to economic expansion and the replacement of lost jobs to globalization is to create more "green regulation" that would create more jobs to enforce and support them.

Spartan lifestyle?
* Mandatory 65 degree thermostats in winter, 85 in summer
* Miniscule windows in new houses
* 45 mph speed limits on all interstates
* forced non-driving on alternate days
* ban sale of incandescent light bulbs
* flush-less eco-earth toilets
* mandatory permissible square footage of house per person
* tax on total miles driven per year over a "permissible" amount, say 5,000 miles
* require homeowners to run their own solar plant on their roof
* ban sale of SUVs. Require all new cars to be hybrids.

Letting ecokooks run government could have serious impacts on your life. It would also cause a huge drop in real estate values as everybody flees our little nirvana.

And if you think we'll be the only one - you're sadly mistaken.

OK, Bush builds a boarder fence around California. California breaks from the US. I sneak out under the fence and claim refugee status.

The "green" building mandates have already begun.
Add public transit and costly toll-roads to the list.

I assume they won't be restricting private jet transport in the near future.

In Kern County (California), we can't have a fire in our fireplaces unless it's deemed an acceptable day for it.

Looks like they forgot about a little something called... FREEDOM. Of course, they only care about freedom for Islamic terrorists.

Don't get too carried away. What happens to them will propagate to us.

Give ya a small example.

OPD valves for your 20lb propane cylinders. They protect -NOT YOU- the consumer, but the trained propane filling station operator from putting more fuel in your bottle than you paid for and causing a dangerous leak.

Propane sellers (not that bastard gas butane!) are always giving you more fuel than you pay for, right! LOL!

So a lefty county judge in Jihad-Johnnie Marin County mandated that Californians pay $25/cylinder to get all the valves changed out. Within a few years, federal law to promote industry coherence and fairness for california vendors.

Meanwhile, industrial users got a waiver because the OPD valves are DANGEROUS to use on serious high volume uses, like field brazing or portable forges.

September 1st in Texas, even that use becomes outlawed, again, to make things more fair for californians.

And of course, not to mention.... CARB affects the cars that every American drives today.

THANKS! Then they'll make us cement up or firePLACES!!!

:-P

See, we get the smog of San Francisco and other points north blown into our walled-in end of the valley. Most of the smog isn't even created here.

alas...
