Girl escapes after being held in cellar for 8 years

AN AUSTRIAN girl held prisoner in a cellar for eight years was reunited with her parents last night after making a dramatic dash for freedom.

Police searching for a man suspected of kidnapping Natascha Kampusch and holding her prisoner said that the alleged kidnapper had committed suicide late last night by jumping in front of a train.

Natascha vanished on March 2, 1998, while walking to school in Vienna. She was 10 years old at the time. She reappeared yesterday after leaping out of a black BMW when it was stopped in a routine police roadcheck.

The BMW was caught in traffic in the Deutsch Wagram suburb of the Austrian capital. The delay had been caused by a police routine roadside check a short distance ahead.

Austrian television said that other motorists had raised the alarm when a girl ran from the car and was then seen apparently in some distress in the garden of a house where officers who came to investigate had found her.

Last night Erich Zwettler, a spokesman for Vienna police, confirmed that the teenage girl was “with 98 per cent certainty” Natascha Kampusch, although a DNA test was being carried out. He said that the tests had included an “age progression test” that had been used on pictures of the girl to show how she would look today, and she also been asked questions that only the real Natascha would be able to answer.

Her father, Ludwig Koch, said that he was “overcome” after being told that his daughter had been found. “I can’t believe that after eight desperate years my daughter is finally coming home. If it is true it will be the greatest thing that could possibly be,” he said.

Herr Koch and Natascha’s mother were at the secure location where the teenager was being kept.

Herr Zwettler said that police had chased the BMW across the city but had lost it. It was later found abandoned in a Vienna wood, and the numberplate had been traced to a house in the Donaustadt area of Vienna, which was found abandoned after a police raid.

Last night the house was surrounded by police, and neighbouring homes were evacuated after the teenage girl said that the man had told her that it would explode if he was ever caught. She said that he had not wanted any evidence left to incriminate him.

Bomb disposal squad experts were reported to be at the scene as well as dogs trained to detect explosives. Border control points had also been placed on alert for the 44-year-old man — known only as Wolfgang P. — who is from Lower Austria. It was also revealed that the suspect was someone “who was known to police”.

Police sources said that the alleged kidnapper committed suicide late last night by jumping in front of a train in Vienna, Austrian television said.

The teenager said that she had occasionally been allowed out of the cellar and had been receiving schooling from her captor, and was able to read and write.

Asked why Natascha had not tried to escape in the past, Herr Zwettler said she appeared to have had “Stockholm Syndrome” — a psychological condition in which long-held captives begin to identify with their captors.

Another police source said: “She is white, pale-looking, as if she had been out of the light of day for a long time, but she articulated well.”

Adolf Brenner, the chief of police in Deutsch Wagram, where the teenager was taken after being found, said that she seemed to be in good spirits despite her ordeal but repeatedly said how happy she was to have been freed.

“He seems to have made great efforts to keep her away from the outside world,” he said. “She was allowed limited access to the television and radio, and sometimes she was given videos.”

Austrian media reported that the girl had told police that she had been sexually abused and police were investigating her claims, but the motive for the kidnapping remained unclear.

MISSING NO LONGER

  • In 1996 Sabine Dardenne, 12, was abducted by the Belgian paedophile Marc Dutroux. Confined to a cellar, she suffered continual abuse until her rescue 80 days later. Her testimony was key in his conviction

  • Natasha Ryan, 14, ran away from home in Australia in 1998. After a huge police search a man was charged with her murder. Five years later, she was discovered living with her boyfriend

  • In 2003 Matthew Scott, a British student, was among eight tourists taken hostage by kidnappers in Colombia. He escaped by jumping into a river and trekking through the jungle for two days

Hopefully this isn't simply a cheap way to find out from Natasha if they were intimate or not?

Maybe they're thinking that perhaps sex didn't happen until he started letting her out over the past year? I mean if she's really pregnant, it's noteworthy that that didn't happen beforehand. Maybe the past 7 years he was keeping / possessing her to be like his China doll...to be admired and such but not molested. Who knows. Either way, the guy was SICK and got what he had coming to him.

Kidnap girl wants house

By JAMES CLENCH

A LEGAL bid by kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch to take possession of her captor’s house was being seen last night as an extraordinary attempt to cling on to her past.

The £120,000 home contains the lair in which she was held as a sex slave for eight years by monster Wolfgang Priklopil.

Experts saw the 18-year-old’s move as more evidence that she formed an emotional bond with Priklopil — and possibly even LOVED him.

Her lawyer admitted she would NOT sell the house if she won ownership of it.

And he could NOT rule out the possibility she would return to visit the grim cellar that was her prison.

The experts said Natascha — grabbed by paedophile Priklopil when she was just ten — appears reluctant to distance herself from the horrors of her captivity.

She may also regard the beast’s home in Strasshof, near Vienna, as her rightful inheritance considering her ordeal.

It also emerged yesterday that neighbours often saw Natascha looking “relaxed” with Priklopil — and the pair had been spotted going out together in his car.

A psychiatrist assigned to the case, Dr Rainhard Haller, offered a fascinating insight into the girl’s state of mind by saying the relationship between the two was complex.

He said: “Priklopil was not only the dominant and cruel kidnapper but also a father, a friend and possibly a lover.”

The developments follow claims that the teenager is pregnant with 44-year-old Priklopil’s baby. Natascha has issued an amazing open letter in which she said she was “mourning” her tormentor, who threw himself under a train a week ago after she finally escaped his clutches.

The legal bid for the property and Priklopil’s assets was announced by Natascha’s lawyer Dr Guenter Harrich.

Communications technician Priklopil owned two-thirds of the house, with the rest belonging to his mum. Natascha’s claim would therefore be worth around £80,000.

He also owned two cars and 24 per cent of the firm he worked for, though the company has little value as it was inactive. Dr Harrich said: “We are filing a demand for the house in Strasshof in the legacy proceedings for Mr Priklopil’s belongings.

“I believe his mother will not object to that. After all, it is a matter of compensation for his victim’s pain and suffering.”

Natascha is also expected to receive a £450,000 payment from Austria’s criminal injuries compensation board.

And Dr Harrich has set up a special account for donations from sympathisers.

The lawyer met Natascha yesterday in the secret “sanatorium-like” establishment where she is staying.

Before the rendezvous, he said he was taking her some make-up she had asked for — and revealed a psychiatrist had given her £30 as she had no money.

He added: “She is a sweet, very nice, clever woman with an unbelievable intellect. She has been busy writing, reading and painting.”

Natascha has refused to return to either of her divorced parents, Ludwig and Brigitta, and is instead set to share a flat with other teenagers.

She is surrounded by an army of child psychiatrists and social workers including the top man in his field, Professor Max Friedrich of Vienna University.

She even has a PR guru, Dieter Ecker, who plans to negotiate a single lucrative interview deal for her amazing story.

Priklopil’s next door neighbours Josef and Leopoldine Jantschek told how Natascha seemed calm and unruffled when she appeared with the kidnapper.

Josef, 66, said: “I saw the young lady in the garden quite often over the past year. They also drove off together in his car and every time she waved at us in a friendly way.”

Josef told how Priklopil claimed Natascha was a Yugoslav home help. He said: “When I asked him if she was his new girlfriend he just said, ‘I have borrowed her from a colleague to do some work for me’.”

But Josef added that Natascha often looked pale and always entered Priklopil’s house through the garage. Hidden stairs led from there to the cellar.

Ugly red welts were seen on Natascha’s legs after her escape.

Sun doctor Carol Cooper said they could have been caused by flea bites, vitamin C deficiency through a poor diet or a skin complaint called pellagra — also caused by a lack of vital vitamins.

Cops yesterday searched for other hidden rooms at the house. But so far they have found no hint more girls were kidnapped.

I can see why her skin became so wretched... No wonder she wants to stay out of the media spotlight. Hopefully she can recover her formerly nice complexion.
