NEAR MISSION -- Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputies are keeping watch at McAllen Medical Center until a suspect in an attempted kidnapping case recovers from surgery for two gunshot wounds. A 49-year-old man north of Mission told authorities he shot at least one of three men who allegedly tried to kidnap him outside of his home Monday night. But when the unidentified suspect arrived at the hospital not long after that incident, he told authorities two children shot him near 29th Street and Nolana Road in McAllen. The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office reported the McAllen Police Department recorded no such event...

Arizona took a public-relations punch to the gut after passing the nation's toughest anti-illegal-immigration law earlier this year, but anyone who thinks (or hopes) the state Legislature will lower its profile on the border-security issue in 2011 likely will be disappointed. The state is positioned like never before to expand its efforts to combat illegal immigration. The November election saw Republican Jan Brewer elected to a second term as governor, largely on the strength of her decision to sign the headline-making law, while the Republican Party added to its already sizable majorities in the state House and Senate. Most significantly...

It took jurors about 45 minutes of deliberation Friday to sentence an alleged crack cocaine dealer to four life sentences — one of which has no possibility of parole — for the kidnapping, rape and forced prostitution of a 13-year-old. Juan Moreno, 45, stood silently as state District Judge Ron Rangel read the sentences. Moreno had faced between 25 years and life in prison without parole for super aggravated sexual assault of a child and between 15 years and life in prison for aggravated kidnapping. The other two convictions, human trafficking and compelling prostitution, are generally second-degree felonies with maximum...

HILL COUNTY (November 17, 2010)—One man was in custody Wednesday in Hill County and local and federal authorities were looking for two others after a woman who was kidnapped Tuesday from her home in Fort Worth managed to free herself and escape from her abductors at a campsite where she was being held. The woman, who’s in her 30s, but whose name and exact age weren’t released Wednesday, was abducted at around noon Tuesday from her home in Fort Worth by three Hispanic men, authorities said. The kidnappers left the woman’s 4-year-old child alone in the house. The woman’s husband...

On paper he was deceased, legally declared dead 16 years ago. In reality, Thomas Steven Sanders had lived openly for years without anyone noticing that fact — until his weekend arrest on suspicion of kidnapping a Las Vegas girl who recently turned up dead. Sanders was arrested Sunday at a Gulfport, Miss. truck stop after a massive nationwide manhunt and charged with kidnapping 12-year-old Lexis Roberts, whose body was found last month in Louisiana, the FBI said. The girl's mother, 31-year-old Suellen Roberts is missing and feared dead in a bizarre case that leaves many wondering how a legally dead...

PROVO -- A 19-year-old Cedar Hills man found guilty of two first-degree felony sex crimes will not be getting a new trial. Sergey Tyler Millett was in court Friday as his attorneys debated new evidence that had arisen since his trial in April as well as the possibility of a new trial. The evidence seemed to indicate that the 15-year-old victim in the case was somehow coerced to give statements to the police regarding the relationship she'd had with Millett when she was 14 and he was 18. However, defense attorney Barbara Gonzales withdrew her motion for a new trial...

Early Tuesday, Perez, 29, chased after a vehicle carrying the girl, who had been sexually assaulted hours earlier. "Thank you for stepping in and never even thinking twice," Mayor Ashley Swearengin told Perez, a father of two boys. Perez has been on a...
