Can someone explain why we still have tenure at all?
The best way to get someone to work hard is something called "incentive" -- with tenure there is none.
The problem is that this leads to "trendy" research. You see that in the sciences today. Every math department wants somebody in biomathematics or some such thing. It is, at best, mathematics with biological applications. At best. At worst, it is a polite fraud.
With tenure, there's enough problem with trendiness. Of course, a lack of tenure would benefit us in the humanties now because it would break the back of the 60s crowd and the younger faculty that they hire under rigid standards of political correctness.
And we also need to kill PC in the accrediting agencies.
Many of these tenured professors find grants of money to study useless stuff, then they write articles and books for more money that no one will ever read.
And we wonder where our tax money goes !

I saw a movie he was in and was wondering if he was the same guy in that famous pollution commercial, so I looked him up on Wikipedia and behold! He`s another Ward Churchill! lol! This guy takes the cake though...He even adopted real native americans as his kids I guess so he could pass himself off as being even more native american. Here is more about him on snopes....
