Cannabis should be decriminalized for the same reasons that alcohol is
The Prometheus Institute ^ | 8/28/2006 | Editorial

It turns out that alcohol is legal for the simplest, most nostalgic, and most American reason of all. Despite its risks and harmful side-effects, adults are reserved right to drink because they are independent adults in a free country. For all of the empty rhetoric about economics and black markets, the end of Prohibition was due to a single principle: even if drinking may be bad for society, government has no right to keep the people from doing it. The ability to get drunk is an inalienable right that we have forever confirmed with the 18th Amendment.

One of the advantages to federalism is that any state can be a laboratory for a new idea. The rest of the states can wait and watch. Legalizing drugs in, say, Oregon would allow the other states to see how it turns out. Other than the national borders, the feds should butt out. It is a state issue.

His rebuttal was past the mark, and partially incorrect.

Perhaps you're right, but I don't think mild marijuana intox affects coordination as much as alcohol.

The only support you've ever provided for this claim

You have never produced anything to the contrary.

"It is generally held that the enactment of a statute or constitutional amendment prohibiting the manufacture annd sale of intoxicating liquors as a beverage, operates to repeal and annul all previously existing laws which permitted such manufacture or sale under regulations or restrictions."

I have never read of a crime committed while under the influence of the depressant heroin

Man held on drug charge after crash

A 31-year-old Petaluma man was arrested for driving under the influence of heroin after smashing into the back of a car at Stony Point Road and West Sierra Avenue Sunday morning, causing the 77-year-old driver to suffer severe cuts and her passenger to break an ankle, said California Highway Patrol sources.

"Alcohol is a bad thing. Drink enough and you can be impaired for a day or even two."

I guess your view is through rose colored glasses, if you have only seen people drink enough to be impaired for a day or even two.

But some people drink enough to be impaired for a lifetime or even two.

Man arrested for indecent exposure
STANFORD -- Stanford police arrested a Palo Alto man Saturday, Nov. 11, after a woman reported that he had exposed his genitals to her in a parking lot near Maples Pavilion.

The woman said she was walking through the lot about noon when a man got out of a car and pulled up his shorts to expose his penis. The woman went to Maples and called 911.

Stanford police Capt. Raoul Niemeyer said Royal Anthony Norman, 45, was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on charges of indecent exposure, being under the influence of heroin and being in possession of drug paraphernalia

The problem is, that we have no way to control millions of stoned kids (and adults) from getting behind the wheel.

Like we control it now? That argument still uses the assumption of increased use after legalization. I didn't turn into an alcoholic when I got 21 and I didn't start smoking either just because it became legal for me. The age limit was a joke. We could get anything at any time regardless of the law but it was harder to find people selling black market cigarettes and booze than it was to find illegal drugs.

Tell that to the folks killed in traffic collisions by stoned drivers.

I'm not advocating driving stoned. There is already a law in place called DUI/DWI that covers any mind altering substance. You can get a DUI from too much OTC medicine also ya know.

Only because you misread it. I was talking about direct OD deaths from MJ, not deaths caused by stupid decisions while under the influence of it. There are already laws on the books that cover those actions, just like if I drank too much Nyquil and ran over someone.

Perhaps you're right, but I don't think mild marijuana intox affects coordination as much as alcohol.

It slows response time down, but that is compensated by the fact that a stoned person is aware of their limitations and adjusts their behavior accordingly (insert joke about driving 20mph on interstate). Alcohol doesn't cause that type of behavior. A drunk person thinks they're invincible and they are prone to taking risks.

If marijuana were legalized, there is no question in my mind that usage would increase. No question. And, my libertarian side says OK, but I still worry about the highways.

The trouble is measuring that statistic. The stats might say usage increased, but is that a real stat or is it just more people being honest on the survey after it's legalized?

In the state of Texas, you can get a DWI/DUI from mere sleep deprivation. All the state needs to prove is that the driver was not in control of his faculties, and by extension, the vehicle.

For what? Driving while under the influence of sleep deprivation?
Whe I was an army MP in Texas in the mid 70s, one had to have had alcohol in one's system, and be under the influence to get arrested for DUI.

Yeah, I know. I've arrested many people for DUI the past 30 years. Your comment was that no one has ever died because of marihuana use. Apparently, I misunderstood the context of your comment.

I don't get the point of this...I am not going to change my mind about legalizing drugs. There is no argument, postion, or supposed fact, that is going to alter my opinion.

I should know better than to get into the drug debates...they're pointless.

I have plenty of first hand exprience with drugs. When I was twenty-nothing I was of the opinion that you are....I have since grown out of that phase and have come to realize that I was wrong. Drugs are harmful to all who come into contact with them either by direct ingestion or by interaction with those who are users/under the influence.

I agree but in exchange anyone who smokes, drinks, or does drugs no longer qualifies for private or government health insurance and cannot collect disability or SSI.
