Barkley sounds off on gay rights, religion and Katrina
AP, ESPN ^ | August 30, 2006

NEW YORK -- Charles Barkley was his usual outspoken self during a recent television interview in which he said, among other things, that he advocates gay marriage, believes Republicans have screwed up the country and is "struggling with my idea of what religion is."

The former NBA MVP, who is considering running as a Democratic candidate for governor in his home state of Alabama, also said Democrats have concentrated too much on criticizing President Bush in the last two years instead of focusing on what they can do to improve things in the country.

"They're criticizing a guy who can't run again, who can't get fired," Barkley said during an appearance on "CMI: The Chris Meyers Interview," which will air on Sunday night on Fox SportsNet. "So they spent the last two years criticizing him instead of saying, 'Some things aren't right. This is our game plan.' And now we're two years away from the election, and we have no solutions and no front-runner."

Barkley was a Republican until recently, saying he switched parties when the Republicans "lost their minds." He said he is troubled by some of the actions of people in the United States in the name of religion.

"Religious people in general are so discriminatory against other people, and that really disturbs me," he said. "My idea of religion is we all love and respect. We all sin, but we still have common decency and respect for other people. So right now I'm struggling with my idea of what religion is."

He also said he supports gay marriage.

Judging from his sense of loyalty, he's a perfect fit for the democrats.

Lookee here, Barkley's too smart to be a moonbat.

It's these new, self-styled "progressives". They don't even like the old-school liberals. They are the ones that have made the D party so scary. They believe they can say things like "Katrina was Bush's fault" and "Bush Lied" without anyone noticing that it just isn't true."

It's worse.

THEY DONT CARE IF IT IS TRUE. Ends justifies means and all. Read between lines of dailyKos banter and their willingness to do anything (lie, steal, cheat) to win comes out - mixed in with the moral smugness that they are morally superior to us on the 'right' who want normal civilization.

Horowitz's FrontPage mag is all over the Gramscian roots of the new left.

Maybe it's like this:

When he was a high income worker paying bigtime taxes, he was GOP.
Now that he is a loafer, he fits more with Democrats.

Honestly, who cares what this idiot has to say? At least 5 years out of the NBA and he is still running his mouth. Can't he just shut up?

Unfortunately that doesn't necessarily change his tax bracket. It could if he didn't have as much income and most of his money was invested in tax deferred investments. This is a problem for me. While it is popular on free republic to discount the import of the middle, I firmly believe the middle has a decisive impact. I recognize that motivating the base is imperative I also believe that winning over the populace is equally if not more imperative critical. Barkley is an honest and straight speaking individual, whether anybody questions his intelligence or not. I like him. This is likely a non event but in no way should it be discounted entirely.

"IQ of 13"

Not even close to reality. A healthy dose of denial sure. This is the equivalent of saying Bush has an IQ of 14...neither of which is true. As a Larry Bird die hard fan I have followed Charles. He is nothing if not plain speaking and very straight forward. Ignore this if you will but I don't like it. I think this is likely a non story but losing a Repub is never good. Console yourself that he was a RHINO or a dem all along but don't fool yourself. We need all votes and the name of the game is how well we sell the truth and converting folks who are dems or in the middle. It doesn't begin and end with get out the base. We need to grow the base.
