Voters back governor (Schwarzenegger, CA), poll shows

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads Democratic challenger Phil Angelides by 13 points, and voters -- though hit with sticker shock -- are backing four of five multibillion-dollar public works bonds, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The Public Policy Institute of California survey shows likely voters favor the Republican governor over the Democrat 45 percent to 32 percent. Preferences have changed little since July, when the poll indicated the governor was leading 43 percent to 30 percent.

The governor's approval rating among likely voters also is up by eight points since May, with 50 percent of voters approving and 42 percent disapproving of the job he's doing.

Poll director Mark Baldassare said the success of the governor's campaign so far is reflected in "independents choosing Schwarzenegger over Angelides by a wide margin -- 42 percent to 23 percent." The trend is most noticeable in Democrat strongholds.

That's certainly good news, but we can't afford to be compacent, it will all depend on turnout, and the Dem union thugs will turn out their supporters in droves.

The voters also favor prop. 1A (roads, infrastructure) and 1E (levees, flood control) -- GOOD.

Now for the bad news: voters also favor 1B (housing bond) and 1C (education bond)

Angelides v. Schwarzenegger is like deciding between ebola and cancer, respectively.

New tag line!

It's only good if you like deferral of loan paybacks and more pork-filled bond spending.
You are consistent!

Californians are happy to take out a loan. Why worry? They'll never have to repay it.

CA has the worst roads in the nation. The MUST be fixed and this is the only way to do it.

By a massive amount of new borrowing? Why not pay out of the existing general fund? But only in California can you deny reality. We have maxed out our credit cards and are going put more on another one. Just wait til there's a recession.

No, it's not the only way to do it--that's why the majority of Republican legislators voted against these bonds.
Remember the Republican plan--Pay as You Go? Instead we have the Perata (D) plan.

Besides, it has been demonstrated that very little of the bond money would go for actual roads. Pork, Pork, Pork.

Republicans are an irrelevant dynamic in Sacramento. There's a Democrat in the Governor's chair and Democrats in the State Legislature. But to his defenders on FR, he can do no wrong because he's a Republican.

BTW, your post is all wrong. You got one out of four right.

1A Prop 42 Change
1B Transportation
1C Housing
1D Schools
1E Flood Control

I accidentally slipped everything by one letter.

Prop. 1B ($19.9 billion transportation bond): 50 percent "yes,'' 38 percent "no.''

Prop. 1C ($2.85 billion affordable-housing bond): 57 percent "yes,'' 32 percent "no.''

Prop. 1D ($10.4 billion education-facilities bond): 51 percent "yes," 39 percent "no.''

Prop. 1E ($4.1 billion water and flood-control bond): 56 percent "yes,'' 35 percent "no."

"Pay as you go" will get you 10 feet of roads fixed every year, how long do you think it will take the fix the roads, not to mention that they continue to deteriorate.

We reached a crisis on the roads.

As I said, the only way to fix them is by borrowing the money and fixing them NOW.

Borrowing is never the problem, the problem is what you do with that money -- investing in infrastructure gets you something for the money, throwing it away on "education" is money down the drain.

40% of the people in this state want to be fiscally responsible. What is it they said about the conservative renaissance happening here? We're still the carny freaks in Blue State California.

And the people who just gave us their pet "global warming" initiative will make California attractive for businesses to invest and have a future here? There's the way all this going to be paid for is through higher taxes and spending cuts in public safety and infrastructure. Don't worry, the Left's pet programs will remain untouched.
