As expected, the California Senate on Thursday approved a bill that would limit purchases of electricity from coal-fired power plants by the state's electric utilities and large companies.
The bill, passed previously by the state Assembly, now moves to the desk of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is expected to sign it. A separate measure to limit greenhouse gas emissions among all heavy industry is also expected to be passed Thursday.
Together, the two steps would make California by far the most active state in combating global warming. The electricity measure, Senate Bill 1368, would prohibit new long-term contracts for basic power supplies from coal-fired generating stations, at least until such power plants install equipment that would greatly reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. California doesn't have any coal-fired plants, but its utilities get about 20% of their supplies from coal-fired plants in other western states.

Why don't they just declare that they are shutting down all industry in the state and people can start to become hunters and gatherers, except they are opposed to hunting too.

hey, the people voted for this. and before you say anything - I live in NY, and the whacko voters here would support the same measures that CA is putting in place - we are just a few years behind.
I live on long island - they are fighting to stop windmills from being put - 6 miles out in the ocean.
They dont want power from coal powered plants? More for the rest of us!

You forgot to mention that they are also opposed to hydroelectric power and want to breach existing dams so salmon can have an easier time swimming back to where they were spawned in order to lay and fertilize their eggs.
I thought California just had an energy emergency a few years ago. Didnt they sue Texas for charging them too much.?

Sadly, in California, it isn't just coal-fired power plants. Its beyond tough to permit any kind of power plant.
You can't build generating plants, they organize to shut down existing plants, and when black-outs and brown-outs inevitably come, they think its a conspiracy.

As I said, the only thing that will make them happy is to go back to stone tools.

The hilarious part of the energy crisis a few years was that Kaleefornia was so desperate for energy that it paid polluting companies for power and paid any fines generated from the pollution. Classic case of the inmates running the asylum.

Deal was sealed when Arnold met Tony Blair at British Petroleum offices...I suspect. It's a natural gas industry payoff.
