Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - September 2006

Posted on 09/01/2006 8:57:29 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Five Years Later, We're Still Not Safe
-Full Story-

In the five years since terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Americans have accepted inconvenience, sacrificed personal liberties and paid billions of dollars for a security clampdown that touches virtually every aspect of their lives.

And we're still not safe.

A close examination of the federal government's homeland security effort shows that there have been major accomplishments since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. But it also reveals how vulnerable the nation remains to catastrophe.

Does anyone else have the strongest feeling yet that there will be a major attack by al-Qaeda on the CONUS within the next month? I just don't like the way the jungle drums are beating.

Terrorist Bomb Expert Captured in Afghanistan; 10 Taliban Rebels Killed

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27, 2006 – Afghan and coalition forces captured a known makeshift bomb expert and terrorist cell leader today during an operation south of Asadabad, U.S. military officials reported.
The terrorist was the leader of a cell that planned bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the Konar region. He was also responsible for placing bombs in various locations in the Pech Valley region.

Intelligence indicated that the terrorist was planning to attack coalition and Afghan security forces in the immediate future, officials said.

“This improvised explosive device builder posed an imminent threat to the safety of not only coalition and Afghan forces, but to the local population,” said Air Force Lt. Col. John Paradis, a coalition spokesman. “This is a positive development in that a key terrorist facilitator has been detained, his actions thwarted and his future plans disrupted. Today’s operation sends a strong message to the extremists. We will continue to pursue these enemies of Afghanistan.”

The operation ended without incident, and no injuries were reported, officials said.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, coalition forces killed 10 Taliban rebels in Paktika province while conducting offensive operations during Operation Mountain Fury on Sept. 25.

Coalition forces spotted 15 extremists operating in the Sharan district and engaged with ground forces and attack helicopters. Five of the extremists broke contact and fled.

“Operation Mountain Fury continues to pressure the enemy to eliminate their ability to coerce and intimidate the Afghan people,” said Army Lt. Col. Paul Fitzpatrick, a coalition spokesman. “We will continue to take the fight to the enemy and destroy them, if necessary, to ensure security here in Paktika and elsewhere.”

In a separate incident in Khost province, a suicide bomber apparently wearing an explosive vest attacked an Afghan National Army vehicle patrol near their encampment. A U.S. soldier received minor injuries, and two vehicles were damaged. The suicide bomber died in the attack.

In other news from Afghanistan, Kapisa province governor, Abdul Satar Murad, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a major road project Sept. 28. The ceremony is in support of the first phase of the recent $3 million road contract provided by the Bagram provincial reconstruction team. The road, when completed, will extend 62 kilometers in length and connect all districts of Kapisa province and make Kapisa the only province in Afghanistan with roads connecting all districts with Kabul.

"This will be the first time that people will be able to travel to all the districts across the province, bringing commerce, security and stability to the region," said Army Maj. Donald Johnson, director of civil-military operations for the Bagram PRT. "Our goal is to aid in making them more self-sufficient and a future partner in the international arena."

Finally, about 70 Afghan and American leaders and experts from around Afghanistan are attending the first national field artillery conference at Kabul Military Training Center this week. The conference is modeled on similar U.S. conferences to facilitate discussion and help units operate using standard procedures.

The culmination event of the conference is a live-fire exercise conducted by the Afghan National Army tomorrow. They will fire Russian Howitzers, large artillery guns and mortars. The live-fire exercise is meant to demonstrate “what right looks like,” officials said.

You're welcome ANYTIME, very good to see you here this week!

NY plot Muslim associated with militants-expert

Snip: A Muslim accused of helping an FBI informant in a fake plot to kill a diplomat has associated with known Islamist militants and sympathized with their violent causes, a terrorism expert testified at his trial on Wednesday.

More US Hispanics drawn to Islam

Snip: The growth in the Hispanic Muslim population is especially prevalent in New York, Florida, California, and Texas, where Hispanic communities are largest. In Orlando, the area's largest mosque, which serves some 700 worshipers each week, is located in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood. A few years ago it was rare to hear Spanish spoken at the mosque, says Imam Muhammad Musri, president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida.

A Georgetown professors Islamic connection

Snip: Professor John Esposito of Georgetown University is a mentor and collaborator of Azzam Tamimi, a British-based Muslim academic who recently publicly espoused the so-called "martyrdom" of Islamic terrorists....

Afghan link to Madrid blasts

Snip: These techniques, using the vibrators of mobile telephones to simultaneously detonate several bombs, were taught in a camp near Jalalabad run by the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group (GICM), said the report.

Madrid suspect freed by mistake

Snip: Saed El Harrak was set free after completing the maximum two-year period for which suspects can be kept in prison without trial. Authorities can apply for the power to hold suspects for a further two years, something they failed to do. El Harrak was arrested after telephone records showed he called several men implicated in the attacks that killed 191 people, days before the event.

His number was also found in the rubble of a flat where suspects blew themselves up as police closed in on them a month after the commuter train blasts. El Harrak later admitted he knew one of men who committed suicide in the flat explosion.

Locust swarm hits Cancun Mexico

Snip: Clouds of locusts have descended around the Mexican beach resort of Cancun, destroying corn crops and worrying officials in a region still recovering from the devastating fury of last year’s Hurricane Wilma. Traveling in dark fogs, locusts are grasshoppers that have entered a swarming phase, capable of covering large distances and rapidly stripping fields of vegetation. “Imagine, they fly in the form of a flock. Imagine the width of a street,” government official Martin Rodriguez said Tuesday, describing the fields around Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula.

2 Mexican customs inspectors arrested in cross border tunnel dig

Snip: Mexican federal police arrested two customs officials and three others on charges of digging a secret tunnel that was presumably to be used for funneling drugs to the United States, authorities said Wednesday. The tunnel, which stretched about 25 yards on land owned by the Mexican customs authority, did not cross the U.S.-Mexico border. It was about 100 yards from the San Ysidro border crossing, which connects Tijuana and San Diego.

Beijing secretly fires lasers to disable US satellites

Snip: China has secretly fired powerful laser weapons designed to disable American spy satellites by "blinding" their sensitive surveillance devices, it was reported yesterday.

Call to investigate infected fish from Iran

Snippets: Al-Mutairi admitted Zubaidi and shrimps in Kuwait’s territorial waters are also infected with the virus but in lesser amounts compared to the fish imported from Iran.

Meanwhile, the Food Safety Committee asked for the continuation of the ban on the import of all kinds of fresh, frozen and canned poultry products from Denmark, reports Al-Qabas.

Pfizer antibiotic may bring re-infections according to study

Snip: Pfizer Inc.'s Zithromax antibiotic may quadruple the risk of being re-infected with a potentially blinding eye infection that the drug is intended to treat, researchers said. While Zithromax worked against the initial outbreak of the infection, called trachoma, those taking the drug were more likely to be re-infected than those treated with surgery alone, said a study published yesterday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Article from: Agence France-Presse

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "SUSPECTED Islamic militants today shot dead four Buddhists in two separate attacks in Thailand's mainly Muslim south, where an insurgency has raged for more than two years, police said.

In one attack, two teenagers in Islamic students' dress and riding a motorcycle, shot and killed three Buddhists in Yala, the capital of a province of the same name.

“The militants exploited the fact that the men were shopping at a grocery store and could not defend themselves, even though they had a gun,” police Colonel Somsak Wannawak said.

Earlier a militant shot dead a Buddhist man in Pattani province while he was riding a bus, police said."

Brussels Returns to Normal, for Now
The Brussels Journal ^ | 09/28/2006 | Paul Belien

Posted on 09/27/2006 11:50:27 PM PDT by Republicain

Last night Brussels police arrested 39 youths, including 15 minors, in the Marollen neigbourhood. The area had seen heavy rioting the previous nights. Some of the arrested immigrants were carrying combustibles. One schack was set alight and one car was torched. The police said there were no serious incidents. Yesterday afternoon Freddy Thielemans, the Mayor of Brussels, told journalists at a press conference that of the 45 youths arrested the previous night 31 were known to the police for a total of 242 crimes. The Mayor emphasized that the riots were the work of youth gangs and cannot be compared to last year’s riots in France since there had been no direct confrontations between the police and the rioters.

Meanwhile, Belgian artists warn that a victory of the “islamophobic” Vlaams Belang [Flemish Interest] party in the local elections on October 8th may lead to violence. In an interview in the Dutch-language weekly Knack Magazine this week painter Luc Tuymans says: “In the worst case you will get organised resistance, perhaps even rather violent reactions. I suspect many shop keepers will have their windows smashed. People do not seem to be aware, but a vote for the Vlaams Belang may have serious consequences. They should realize this before they take a final decision in the voting booth.”

Tuymans is one the artists supporting the free 0110 concerts against the Vlaams Belang. The concerts are subsidized by the Belgian national lottery and are broadcasted on public radio and television. Another artist supporting 0110 is rock singer Arno, who said this week that Brussels is an example for the future of Europe, since it is “one of the only Arab cities which is not in a state of war.”

Last week, self-declared “anti-fascist” activists vandalised a car with Belgian licence plates in Amsterdam. They mistook the vehicle for the car of Vlaams Belang politician Filip Dewinter. The car, however, belonged to a French businesswoman based in Brussels. VB politicians are often the victims of acts of vandalism, including arson attempts. Yesterday the party announced that it has established a fund to reimburse local candidates whose properties gets damaged.

"Suicide bomb victims can sue NatWest"
Thursday September 28, 05:00 AM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NEW YORK (Reuters) - A lawsuit brought by victims and families of suicide bombings in Israel seeking damages from Royal Bank of Scotland Plc's NatWest claiming the unit knowingly provided services to a charity linked to Hamas can proceed, a U.S. federal judge ruled on Wednesday.

The suit, filed in federal court in Brooklyn in January, made claims on behalf of 15 families of Americans wounded in attacks. It said NatWest enabled
U.K. charity Interpal to raise funds on its Web site knowing the U.S. government identified the charity as a fund raiser for Hamas, violating U.S. anti-terrorism laws.

Interpal was named a Specially-designated Global Terrorist in August 2003 by U.S. authorities, alleging it supports Hamas's activities."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: ""The court's decision again affirms the civil remedies available to American victims of terrorism," said Gary Osen, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, adding the judge said the U.S. government did not distinguish between a "terrorist wing" of Hamas and any charitable wing."

N. Korea Digging New Tunnels Where Nuclear Tests Are Possible(potential HEU site also located)

N. Korea Digging New Tunnels Where Nuclear Tests Are Possible

5 Tunnels in the valley of Mu-myong Mountain... could also be missile bases

Kim Jong-tae

Intelligence agencies have learned that N. Korea is digging five new tunnels suspected to be a missile base in the valley of Mu-myong Mountain(2851 ft), Shi-jung County, Jagang Province, N. Korea. They are looking into it carefully.

In particular, they do not rule out the possibility that the tunnels could be used for nuclear test. Furthermore, they also received intelligence that there are uranium-enrichment facilities at Hwa-pyong County, Jagang Province, and now trying to verify it by examining satellite photos.

A high-level government official said on Sept. 28, "We came to the possession of intelligence that N. Korea has been constructing five tunnels in the valley of Mu-myong Mountain recently. We were able to verify the existence of five such tunnels. While it is quite likely that this is another missile base in the rear area, we should not rule out that it could be also an underground nuclear test site."

The intelligency outfits are now trying to find out any additional indication that storage facilities for rocket propellent are also under construction.

The source also said, "Some recent N. Korean defectors gave us information that uranium enrichment facilities are located at Hwa-pyong County, Jagang Province. We are trying to verify it from satellite images. Hwa-pyong County is a remote mountain area. Chances are high that they could construct sensitive installations there, requiring extra security."

Another government figure said, "N. Korea has high quality uranium mine. It turned out that Pakistan's Dr. Abdul Kadir Khan had provided N. Korea with centrifuge devices. N. Korea could be running uranium enrichment project. If such facilities exist, N. Korea would use it to boost their bargaining power during their negotiation with U.S."

Defense Ministry stated that N. Korea was suspected to be building uranium enrichment facilities in a classified report submitted last Sept. to S. Korea's legislature.

Currently, N. Korea officially denies the existence of uranium enrichment program. However, N. Korea has uranium mines producing good quality ore, and Dr. Khan provided N. Korean with 20 centrifuges, crucial devices for the enrichment process. S. Korea and U.S. intelligence are both paying keen attention to the facilities at Hwa-pyong County.

Especially, we should be reminded that the second N. Korean nuclear crisis was precipitated when N. Korea's Highly Enriched Uranium(HEU) Program was known to the world in late 2002. If the uranium enrichment facilities are to be confirmed, it will have serious repercussion.

Muslim Youths Destroy 10 Nigerian Churches
Added: Sep 27th, 2006 2:40 AM

Rioters demand stoning of Christian woman accused of ‘blaspheming’ Muhammad.
by Obed Minchakpu

DUTSE, Nigeria, September 25 (Compass Direct News) -- A mob of Muslim youths injured six Christians -- one critically -- and set fire to 10 churches last week in Dutse, capital of Jigawa state in northern Nigeria.

The attacks on September 19 and 20 were sparked by allegations that a Christian woman had blasphemed the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Angered Muslims demanded that the woman, identified only as a tailor named Jummai, be stoned to death for her comments.

“Muslims believed that the Christian woman would not be stoned to death, and that is why they decided to vent their anger on Christians and their churches,” Malam Isa Hussani told Compass.

Rumors spread rapidly, and after a few skirmishes on the evening of the dispute, a rampage broke out the following morning against the churches, homes and businesses of local Christians.

Hundreds of Muslims assembled on September 20 at 10 a.m. at Dutse’s Central Mosque, with another group congregating at the district Muslim leader’s residence. Christian leaders said the mobs were addressed by the Emir (Muslim leader) of Dutse, Dr. Nuhu Muhammadu Sanusi, his defense minister, and Jiwaga State Governor Ibrahim Saminu Turaki.

According to the South Korean online “OhmyNews” website, all three officials as well as State Police Commissioner Abubakar Sardauna were trying to “keep the protest from getting out of hand,” but failed when police fired teargas into the crowd, enraging the protestors and sending them on a rampage. Sardauna declined to speak to Compass about the incident.

The Rev. Joseph Hayab, secretary of the North-Western Nigerian chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, confirmed that 10 churches were torched in the attack, although a police spokesman told Reuters that a total of 11 churches had been burned.

Pope’s statements fuel dispute

Hussani, one of the Dutse Muslims protesting against the woman, said that Jummai’s argument with an unidentified Muslim man on September 19 had started over controversial statements about Islam attributed to Pope Benedict XVI the previous week.

But persons who witnessed the verbal dispute stated that Jummai was reacting to a blasphemous remark against Jesus Christ made by the Muslim man.

“Such a minor incident between a Muslim man and a Christian woman should not have led to the destruction of churches,” Hayab told Compass. “This is a heinous crime in the name of religion.”

According to sources in the Anglican congregation, which lost St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral in the attack, the Anglican bishop’s residence was also partially destroyed, forcing BishopYusufu Lumu to seek shelter with his wife and children at a local police station.

In addition, an Assemblies of God church, the Living Faith Church and three Evangelical Church of West Africa churches were confirmed among those demolished.

At least 20 Christian homes were also looted and destroyed during the rampage, along with 40 shops belonging to Christian traders. More than 1,000 local Christians who were displaced during the attack fled to the police barracks and schools to escape from the mob.

The Jigawa state government imposed an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew after the violent attacks.

On September 22, the federal government sent armored tanks and truckloads of armed soldiers and anti-riot police into Dutse to patrol the town during Friday Muslim prayers.

Police reported that six Christians injured in the attacks received treatment at Dutse General Hospital. One victim is in critical condition, with local doctors saying they lack adequate facilities to treat his injuries.

Another Christian identified only as Mr. Friday, a security officer for the governor, was slashed across his face with a machete before being rescued from the mob by police.

Police authorities in Dutse have detained Jummai for questioning on the incident. There was no confirmation whether the Muslim who had argued with her was also in custody, although police spokesman Nwakalor Ejike confirmed on September 22 that more than 20 people had been arrested over the incident.

Ejike, a police public relations officer, attributed the riots to “a little misunderstanding,” which he said the police were working to contain.

An estimated 80 percent of Dutse’s population are Muslim. In a previous outbreak of violence in the town nearly two years ago, heavily armed Muslim militants attacked Christian evangelists during an open-air preaching event.

Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido, the Sultan of Sokoto and spiritual head of Nigeria’s Muslims, declared after last week’s attacks that religion should not be used as a tool of violence. “No religion will support violence, harassment, victimization and all vices, let alone murdering of innocent people,” Maccido told Nigeria’s The Guardian.

Jigawa state is one of 12 northern Nigerian states that have imposed Islamic law in the past six years. Repeated outbreaks of religious violence have erupted ever since, claiming thousands of lives. In a similar incident in Jigawa state’s Kazaure town in November 2003, Muslim militants burned 10 churches and destroyed 100 Christian properties.
