Al-Qaida in Iraq Leader Urges 'Holy War'

The new leader of al-Qaida in Iraq urged Muslims to make the holy month of Ramadan a "month of holy war," in an audiotape posted on Islamic Web site Thursday. He also purportedly said that more than 4,000 foreign fighters have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion.

The man on the tape identified himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir _ also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri _ the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, though the voice could not be independently identified. He is believed to have succeeded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who died in a U.S. airstrike north of Baghdad in June.

"I congratulate the Muslim nation on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, the month of jihad (holy war). I ask God to make it a month for honor and victory for Muslims," the voice said.

I'm not sure the AP is reporting his statement correctly, but I can't say for sure since I don't know Arabic and haven't seen a translation.

But I'd venture to guess that al-Masri is claiming 4,000 coalition troops have been killed since the invasion (US, UK, Poland, Japan, Italy, Canada, Ukraine, etc).

In any case, al-Masri would not describe jihadis as "foreign fighters" being "killed", but as holy warriors being martyred. And he would need to add a zero to that number to make it close to being a realistic jihadi casualty count.

The past two weeks have been the two most violent weeks in Iraq's recent history bar none. Al Qaeda delivered on the 9/7 threat to make the following 15 days a "kill zone".

They will attempt to deliver on this Ramadan threat as well.

Al-Masri tape first. Then Zawahiri. Then, if successful, UBL.

In a new audio message Thursday, the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq called for explosives experts and nuclear scientists to join his group's holy war against the West. He also said that more than 4,000 foreign insurgent fighters have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

Al-Masri was their chief of international operations up until 2004. And his predecessor Zarqawi was the overall WMD head of al Qaeda in the late 90s. I would not only assume that the troops are at a much higher risk now, but the home front as well.

DUBAI (AFP) - Al-Qaeda's chief in Iraq called for launching biological warfare on US troops in the war-torn country, in an audio-clip posted on the Internet.

"My message to the pioneers ... especially atomic and explosives experts: We are in urgent need for you, as the American bases are the perfect place for non-conventional experiments of biological and dirty (warfare)," said the voice, purportedly that of to Abu Hamza al-Muhajer.

Muhajer said the group was launching a new "all-out offensive ... to uproot the infidels and the apostates," from Iraq, in reference to the US-led coalition forces and their supporters among the Iraqis.

In the same tape, he also offered amnesty to Sunni Arab tribal leaders who have collaborated with the government if they revert to supporting the insurgency.

The amnesty would last until the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, "I tell those (tribal sheikhs) who stood by the betrayers and sold out their religion and honour in this blessed month: We today offer you a full amnesty," he said.

This amnesty is however "contingent to your declaration of a full repentance ... and cooperation with your brothers the mujahedeen (holy warriors) to drive the occupier out" of Iraq, he said in the tape whose authenticity could not be verified.

Early in September, the terror network chief also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri urged each Iraqi Sunni to kill one of the 141,000 US soldiers in Iraq by the start of Ramadan.

Muhajer took over as Al-Qaeda's leader in Iraq after a US air strike killed his predecessor, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, on June 7.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq called for the kidnapping of Westerners to swap for a Muslim cleric jailed in the United States, according to an Internet audio tape issued on Thursday.

The speaker, identified as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, said more than 4,000 foreign fighters have been killed in Iraq while fighting U.S.-led forces and the Baghdad government.

He urged militants to step up their jihad, or holy war, in Iraq during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends in the last week of October.

"I call on every holy fighter in Iraq to strive during this holy month (Ramadan)... to capture some dogs of the Christians so that we can liberate our imprisoned sheik," he said.

The speaker accused U.S. jailers of "torturing" Egyptian cleric Omar Abdel-Rahman, who was found guilty in 1995 of conspiracy to attack U.S. targets including the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center in New York.

The tape's authenticity could not be verified but it was posted on major Web sites used by militants. . .

He accused U.S. jailers of "torturing" Egyptian cleric Omar Abdel-Rahman, held over links to the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center in New York.

The speaker also called for attacks on U.S. military camps in Iraq using "unconventional bombs such as biological and dirty bombs."

Anger at police treatment of British Muslims is growing in east London where people plan to hold a protest this weekend, with some even urging the community to stop cooperating with the authorities.

Members of the area's large South Asian population feel they are being unjustly targeted by the police in the fight against terrorism.

They cite a massive raid on a house in Forest Gate last Friday in which two British Muslim brothers were arrested, one of whom was shot.

Both men remain in custody but neither has been charged and investigators at the property on Lansdown Road have seemingly failed to find any evidence of a possible terrorist plot.

"People in the community are angry about the raid, they are angry about the shooting, they are angry about the lack of evidence and they are angry that the two men have been detained for so long without charge," John Rees, national secretary of the anti-Iraq war political party Respect said.

Mohammed Abdul Kahar, 23, and 20-year-old Abul Koyair were due to learn on Wednesday whether the authorities planned to press charges, ask to hold them for longer or set them free.

Angry at the situation, scores of largely Muslim locals packed a community centre near the brothers' house on Tuesday evening to hear speeches criticising police and government tactics by Rees, Yvonne Ridley, a journalist and fellow Respect member, and Moazzam Begg, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee.

- the chief of the Al-Qaïda branch in Iraq invited his partisans to remove Westerners in this country in order to exchange them against the release of an Egyptian monk held in the United States, in an audio recording put in line Thursday on Internet.

"I invite each moujahidine in the country of the two rivers (Iraq) to better do of sound during this blessed month (of the Moslem fast of the Ramadan)", affirmed Abou Hamza Al-Mouhajer.

"Can Allah enable us to capture some of the dogs of the Christians in order to release our sheik", continued Hamza Al-Mouhajer, in reference to Omar Abdoul Rahmane, who is held for the attacks of 1993 against World Trade Center in New York.

Hamza Al-Mouhajer succeeded Abou Moussab Al-Zarqaoui, the former chief of Al-Qaïda in Iraq killed in June in an American raid.
