PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A couple found a man raping a young woman in their driveway and tried to flee with her but were shot to death by the attacker, police said.

The teenager was also shot and was expected to recover, police said. A suspect was arrested.

The couple came upon the attack when returning to their home in the Fern Rock neighborhood from a night out late Wednesday, police said.

Unfortunately, the article does not state how the couple was interuppting the attack, but it just reinforces one thing in my mind:

A violent aggressor needs to be dealt with in only 1 way.

A perfect example for why concealed weapons permits should be allowed for law abiding citizens everywhere.

Right you are. We here in FL have concealed carry and despite all the hysteria before it became law there has been a decrease in violent crime and absolutely no reckless or abusive behaviour on the part of licensees.

I don't have concealed carry myself but I do possess a firearm and can tell you a true personal experience about gun control and its real-life consequences.

Very disturbing story. That perp needs to go to the front of the line on death row.

Agreed that concealed-carry has done wonders with lowering crime rates in various states. The purp in this case would not have been able to kill the Samaritans had they had a weapon in hand. I hope your own experience was not too traumatic.

Too bad the couple didn't have a gun handy.

get the permit (if possible) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! having it will go a long way for you in court if you happen to be involved in a shooting of any kind.

The cops cannot be in the front line to prevent crime.
Most often they are mere historians to a crime.

Concealed carry is the answer.

At the time it was somewhat traumatic but in retrospect I can see it as something learned. I like to describe it as being "mugged by reality".

Anyway, here it is. Before I relocated to the Sunshine State I resided in the Garden State (NJ). In NJ there is a vast expanse of wilderness (at the time a million acres) called the Pine Barrens or Pinelands. This consists of pine trees, sugar sand, an occasional ranger tower and a few hiking trails.

I decided to take my young son on an overnight hike. On the first night we set up camp and were asleep in our tent when we were awakened by the howling of dogs. The howling became louder as they were obviously getting closer.

I won't go through all the melodramatic details but we made it to the car in the nick of time -- surrounded by a big pack of vicious howling wild dogs.

I later learned that this was the result of people tossing unwanted pets into the woods. Of course being dogs they instinctively formed packs and the demands of struggling to survive in a wilderness made them revert to a primitive ferocity and the fearlessness of the "pack mentality".

After that misadventure I decided I'd never go back there without a gun. NOW begins the real nightmare. I went to my local police station and applied for a gun permit.

I received a stack of forms. The police chief laughed and said to forget about a hand gun - I'd be lucky if I got a rifle permit!

I'll abbreviate by telling you that I was photographed, finger printed, and investigated by local, state, and federal agencies. I had to get three (non-relative) references from others ( employer, e.g) who had to complete forms that I was later told required personal private information unrelated to a firearm request.

A year passed. My periodic inquiries were to no avail. Meanwhile, every time I read the Asbury Park Press or the Newark Star Ledger (two of our N.J. newspapers) I saw incidents describing how criminals were murdering, robbing, and maiming with their weapons.

Then it dawned on me that IT WAS I (and other law-abiding citizens) who were left vulnerable and incapable of self-defense.

After 13 MONTHS I received a permit and bought a Ruger .22 caliber rifle. In NJ we had a joke that you need a license for a pea shooter - only too true!

Here's the contrast: When I arrived in FL I went to a local retailer and bought a .38 Special revolver. I selected the gun, had a computerized background check, and was on my way home with my gun in less than an hour!

I couldn't believe it and was waiting for cops in a squad car to come handcuff me! That's what NJ did to me - the state with the toughest gun control laws!

To summarize, I learned the hard way that gun control for law abiding citizens actually enables the criminal underclass --- John Lott was right!! MORE GUNS, LESS CRIME!

The 18-year-old woman broke free and began screaming about the assault, and she and the couple then fled while the attacker fired at them with a semiautomatic handgun, according to police. The three tried to hide nearby, but the assailant found them and fired more shots as they lay on the ground, Chief Inspector Joseph Fox said.

Too bad this didn't happen in Texas. He'd have a date with a needle.

Get your CCW.

We here in Florida have an unwritten rule: You guard me; I guard you.

My .357 is in the glove box not just to protect me, but to protect the guy in front of me.

I need to know, did the perp break any gun control laws, because certainly those laws should have stopped him from having an unregistered firearm?

I can understand your feeling of paranoia after that purchase. I own several long guns from inheritance and private purchases. About two weeks ago I purchased a rifle at a Wal-Mart as a gift for a buddy of mine. They took my SS# and got on the phone as I filled out a long form. After the clerk got off the phone I asked her, "What was that about?" She told me it was to the FBI and that no 'flags' arose so the sale was OK'd by them. I jokingly said, "Good, that means I got away with it." I was informed that sometimes, as the Feebs check further, things pop up and they contact the purchaser. For the next couple of days, I jumped whenever the phone rang. Mind you, I'm over 60, did my time in the Navy and have never been arrested, yet I was concerned with what they might 'find.' One bad keystroke by some faceless bureaucrat anywhere in any agency and I might have gotten that call or not been able to make the purchase. As it stands, I'm going to have to get a notarized bill of sale when I give him the gun in order to protect myself if he sells it or it's stolen.
Sometimes I'm glad I'm old and gonna die soon.

The left doesn't want law-abiding citizens to have guns because:
1. most crime is committed by the beloved of the left, the "oppressed".
2. the left wants the "oppressed" to take money and posessions from the "oppressors".
3. therefore the left wants to ban guns, knowing full well that law-abiding citizens would obey the law and the "oppressed" would not.

That's what the anti-gun nazis tell us....

If the most dangerous phrase uttered by a redneck is "Hey y'all! Watch this!", then the most frightening phrase from a liberal is "We only want to help you."

As a former Vermonter, that is one (of the few) good things about that State.

NO law against carrying concealed. Don't even need a permit or license.

Of course, I'm surprised that with the political climate there (one of the top 10 most liberal States in the Country, IMHO) that this law has survived as long as it has.
