Another question is why is the Catholic Church incolved in this?

Related article: Pro-Immigrant Protests Haven't Produced Surge of New Voters

Immigration protests that brought hundreds of thousands of marchers into the nation's streets this spring promised a potent political legacy, a surge of new Hispanic voters. ''Today We March, Tomorrow We Vote,'' they vowed.

But an Associated Press review of voter registration figures from Chicago, Denver, Houston, Atlanta and other major urban areas that saw large rallies shows no sign of a historic new voter boom that could sway elections.

Even in Los Angeles, where a 500,000-strong protest in March foreshadowed demonstrations across the United States, an increase in new registrations before the June primary was more trickle than torrent in a county of nearly 4 million voters.

Protest organizers, principally unions, Hispanic advocacy groups and the Catholic Church, acknowledge that it has been hard to translate street activism into ballot box clout, though they insist their goal of 1 million new voters by 2008 is reachable.

There it is again -- why is the Catholic Church involved in politics?!

Cesar Chavez is spinning in his grave. His farmworker's union opposed immigration for the obvious (except to economists) reason that competition from illegals drove down wages and allowed growers to break strikes.

Now these union clowns could care less about workers. All they care about is dues and clout.

"Another question is why is the Catholic Church incolved in this?"

Cardinal R. Mahoney is on the radical left fringe of Catholicism. Most Catholics in the U.S. understand this and abhor the things he does/is doing to the Catholic Church in the U.S., (me included). Even this barren looking "cathedral" he built at parishoner expense is hugely controversial amongst Catholics, as was his going into business in the grave industry.

That said, Cardinal Mahoney does not represent Catholics beyond the radical left fringe element in the Church who want to turn the Church into a liberal 'democracy' and bastion of feminist and homosexual "rights". Mahoney is not the Pope, nor does he represent him in any official way; so what he says and does cannot honestly be said to represent the Catholic Church in any official way. The man is a radical, liberal renegade, even amongst most of his liberal peers in the U.S. He is a major embarrassment to most Catholics.
