Irwin family offered state funeral

STEVE Irwin will get a state funeral if that's what his family wants, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie says.

The 44-year-old media personality and environmentalist died yesterday when a stingray barb punctured his heart while he was filming a nature documentary off the coast of Port Douglas in north Queensland....

Asked if his government would honour Irwin with a state funeral, Mr Beattie replied: "We will honour Steve Irwin in whatever way his family wants."

But first it was important to let his wife Terry and two young children, who recently returned to Queensland from Tasmania, deal with the tragedy, he said.

"Our first thoughts have to be with Terry and the children and I don't want to say or do anything that will make their grief worse because they are a wonderful family," Mr Beattie said....

"Do people remember an Animal planet ( or Discovery channel) episode where Steve Irwin does a training session with the US delta force in a forest? "

I remember that, wasn't it the one where he went through the course before them to remove the snakes.?

Did you see the repeat last night with Larry King from 2004? He was trying to plan a zoo for Vegas. I wonder if he ever found a partner to accomplish that?

Once more he said the reason was to teach people about animals, particularly the ones that get a bad rap and the ones who are becoming extinct along with their habitat.

He wanted to become a US citizen along with his children to have dual citizenship. He loved our country as much as his own. Of course Terri was from Oregon and they were married there.

Yes, I did see that. I think it was back in 2004. Maybe plans are in the pipeline or maybe a dream. He certainly had big plans. My nieces went to his Zoo in Australia and they were VERY impressed. Unfortunatly they didn't meet him. He was out filming somewhere.

Well the kids are 1/2 American ;)

Hey LVM have you heard any news in Vegas about the Croc Hunter opening a zoo there?

In Nov 04 he was on Larry King saying that was something he really wanted to do.

I don't remember hearing anything about that. Normally, I don't watch any local news but will for a few days to see if they say anything.

We've both pulled up articles from the Scotsman but yours is from June and mine from August. Looks like Tony Blair changed his mind: http://news.scotsman.com/politics.cfm?id=1156202006

OK, thanks for the clarification. Still, since it was done for Churchill but not since, it's not the "slight" that it would be over here for a president.

A state funeral would be appropriate to honor such a wonderful man.

But the family's wishes should be respected.

May God be with Terry and the children.

I think more highly of Steve than Diane Spencer. Steve DID something with his short life. What did Diane do? Not much ... jilted, told all, suffered from bulimia, by choice and last associated with a party boy. Not impressed.
