Haleigh Poutre Almost Victim of Euthanasia, Now Making Good Progress
Life News ^ | September 4, 2006 | Steven Ertelt

Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Haleigh Poutre was the victim of child abuse and was nearly killed via euthanasia when Massachusetts officials gave up on her after she entered a coma. Now Poutre, once termed "brain dead" by doctors, continues to improve and is speaking a few words, her grandmother says.

Sandra Sudyka, the girl's biological grandmother, is no longer allowed to visit her granddaughter and now says she is ready to speak to the media about Poutre's condition.

She told The Republican newspaper that she last saw Poutre on July 18 but indicated she was "doing well."

"She was bright-eyed and smiling. She is always responsive to us," Sudyka explained.

Department of Social Services had asked Sudyka not to talk with reporters about Haleigh, but since they will no longer allow her and Haleigh's biological mother, Allison Avrett, to visit the 12 year-old, she said she's going to talk to the media.

"I decided since they broke the deal, I am going to talk. People should know how well she is doing," Sudyka told the newspaper.

"They don't want people to know how she is doing after they wanted to pull the plug," Sudyka said.

DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro declined an interview with The Republican but said that the visiting privileges have been suspended, not terminated.

Haleigh first began speaking in June, her grandmother told the newspaper.

"I was saying to her 'I love you,' and she was trying to say 'love' and it came out as a vibration...'ove,'" Sudyka said.

Sudyka, who is working with an attorney to adopt the girl, said she has said hello, responds to comments and questions, speaks nonverbally and is able to write her name. Haleigh can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair.

Avrett, Poutre's biological mother, lost custody of her daughter after physically abusing her. Poutre was put into a foster home where her adoptive parents also abused her. Her adopted mother committed suicide after abusing Poutre so much she had to be hospitalized.

DSS took Poutre into custody and when she appeared to slip into a coma, the agency asked the state Supreme Court for permission to take her life. That's when Poutre began responding.

Poutre has been receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy since January 26 at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.

Gov. Mitt Romney appointed a commission to look into how the state failed to properly handle the girl's case.

One supposes the approximately fifty brain specialists who testified or filed affidavits for Terri were the irresponsible sort.

Ahhhh, but were they subscribers to NPR?????

Wagglebee has pinged us to a thread by TheDon on the woman who regained consciousness, too. This is extensively covered news today, maybe will shed lots of light and awareness.

Owen and colleagues contend their fMRI experiment showed the car-crash victim had some preserved conscious awareness despite her vegetative state.

How could they tell? First, they checked that she could process speech. Upon being told "there was milk and sugar in the coffee," the fMRI showed brain regions reacting the same in the woman and in healthy volunteers.

Vegetative patients may have awareness

RINOPLASTY WITH SOME LIBeralSUCTION = Charlie Crist.

Here's the web site I talked about. People from other states have joined together at the grassroots level to help Floridians get their kids back from state custody. Martin Anderson was suffocated to death while in state custody. The new little boy is in a less than minimally conscious state after being in state custody. There are a hundred families who are in a flash movie about their experience with Florida's DCF. They WANT THEIR KIDS BACK.

Ping to wagglebee thread on the morning after, Plan B...

Recent publicity concerning Plan B has been seriously misleading. The Plan B morning-after pill has been referred to as "contraception," even though it may act after fertilization to cause the death of a human embryo. This is an important mistake because, whatever one's judgment on abortion may be, I think we all agree that no woman should be misled into doing what she would consider to be taking a life without realizing that she is doing so.

You do know, though, that organs are no longer 'fresh' once you die. In order for them to be useful, they must bve removed before your heart actually stops beating.

Keep researching this, for your own peace of mind.

What I would worry about is while they are plucking out my parts, they wouldn't even give me an aspirin to stop the pain, so as not to contaminate the parts. Probably wouldn't even smile or wink at me while doing it as I watched either.

Luckily, mine are bargain basement quality, too much mileage.

You are lucky, sadly. :-/

I have told my husband and children I would not sign for any organs to be removed to their bodies, or to be added.

I'm old fashioned, I believe the Good Lord gave each of us the proper organs. It's up to us to create a life with what He deigned to bestow on us, good or bad.

Further to the above. Somebody stretched medical logic to, or beyond, the breaking point, in order to get a theory of "bulimia" as the cause of Terri's acute hypokalemia. I don't believe a single case has ever been reported the way they said it happened. (Actually, it wasn't a doctor who did the stretching, it was a trial lawyer.)

The answer is a lot simpler. Trauma causes hypokalemia. Trauma also causes other symptoms that Terri suffered. Trauma causes cardiac arrest. Trauma was observed in Terri's bone scan. Domestic violence is the #1 cause of death and injury in young women.

Hypokalemia following trauma.

That's exactly what led to the Harvard committee creating the new "death with a beating heart" back in the late 1960s. The so-called brain death. Without that, it's mighty hard to find any cadavers fresh enough for organ donation. Note that the Harvard conditions for brain death DO specify that even the brain stem is gone, meaning the patient would die immediately without the aid of a ventilator. Nevertheless, "brain death" is still somewhat controversial in medicine; some insist on the old definition of death -- all systems stop.

A probable moral lapse of the sort I mentioned occurred in my extended family, and I could not do a thing about it. The patient was found unconscious from carbon monoxide after a home fire. I am told by a Freeper nurse that if the heart is still beating -- and it was -- this is treatable (I think by hyperbaric oxygen treatment, but I'm not a medic). The patient, though breathing, was diagnosed as brain dead and was duly carved up for organs. The patient was young (early forties), so the organs were no doubt of the best sort, and lucrative. We'll never know for sure, but I'm reasonably sure the patient had a chance to recover. The lure of six-figure profits for organ harvest may have been too much for a meticulous diagnosis.

Thanks for your clarification and additional info, T'wit.

I think this is going to be a very big scandal when it is uncovered in several years.

People have no idea about what it really involved in organ donation... they are removed from living, breathing bodies. Otherwise, they are useless.

And the medical community is sure not trying to educate people on the realities...

Thanks! :-)

Yep. We know the person is still alive when their organs are harvested. It's called stripping.

Lest we forget. JACK DAY has been elected a judge in the Sixth Circuit. He is a fine person and he beat one of Crist's friends.

We are breaking up Greer's gang. Little by little, we are putting fair judges in the Sixth Circuit and not electing the likes of Robert Michael, whose father was the first judge to name Mikey as guardian.

No big deal T'wit. Just a few years later he tried to kill her in the nursing home and admitted it. I guess that was a sign of things to come. Something is wrong down there.

I have learned recently that a few trolls have never seen that information, so I guess I should repost it for posterity.

November 1993

Michael Schiavo Deposition, Guardianship Hearing

Q. What was her bladder condition?
MS. She had a UTI.

Q. What is that?
MS. Urinary tract infection..

Q. What did the doctor tell you treatment for that would be?
MS. Antibiotic usually..

Q. And did he tell you what would occur if you failed to treat that infection? What did he tell you?
MS. That sometimes urinary tract infection will turn to sepsis..

Q. And sepsis is what?
MS. An infection throughout the body..

Q. And what would the result of untreated sepsis be to the patient?
MS. The patient would pass on..

Q. So when you made the decision not to treat Terri's bladder infection you, in effect, were making a decision to allow her to pass on?
MS. I was making a decision on what Terri would want..

Q. Had the bladder condition been treated?.
MS. Yes.

Q. And was...what was the reason that the bladder condition was treated?
MS. Sable Palms Nursing Home said they could not do that by some Florida law which wasn't stated..

Q. But you didn't change your opinion or your decision to not treat the bladder condition?
MS. We did change it..

Q. Correct?
MS. Repeat the question..

Q. You did not change your decision not to treat the bladder condition, correct?
MS. I had to change my decision..

Q. Sable Palms changed it for you?
Attorney Nillson Objection.

Q. Okay. Is there any reason that you would not make the same decision that you previously made if the problem came up again?
MS. Repeat your question. You're losing me here..

Q. Let me be more specific. If your wife developed another condition that could result in her death, is there any reason that you would not take the position that you're not going to treat that condition and you're going to instruct the doctor not to treat that condition?
MS. I wouldn't instruct anybody, no..

Q. You instructed the doctor not to treat the condition, correct?
Attorney Nillson Objection.

Q. You did instruct the doctor not to treat her bladder condition, correct?
MS. Uh-huh. Yes..

Q. If a similar...would you do the same?
MS. I'm thinking..

Q. Take your time.
MS. I probably wouldn't instruct the doctor to do it..

Q. So you've changed your opinion?
MS. Sort of, yeah..

Q. Why have you changed your opinion?
MS. Because evidently there is a law out there that says I can't do it..

Q. Is that the only reason?
MS. Basically, maybe..

Q. What you're telling me is, is that there is nothing in your belief or feelings that have changed. The only thing that has changed is the fact that you perceive the law prevents you to do what you intended to do
MS. Correct..

Q. What did you do with your wife's jewelry?
MS. My wife's jewelry?.

Q. Yeah.
MS. Um, I think I took her engagement ring and her...what do they call it...diamond wedding band and made a ring for myself..

Q. What did you do with her cats?
MS. Her cats were put to sleep on the advice of my mother-in-law.

(Note: The veterinarian who performed the euthanasia of Terri's pets came forward to say there was never any suggestion from Terri's mother that this be done and it was done only on Mr. Schiavo's insistence.)
