Good for you!!
Have fond memories of the 2 years I was assistant coach in Little League. That was 20+ years ago but will never forget the players on the team. Great group of kids.
That must have been great fun. Coaching those kids with their many emotions has to be one of life's wonderful pleasures.
I thought a lot of things too when I saw the pictures but race never entered my mind. I can't help but wonder at someone who has that thought flash through their grey matter. But I promise not to think about you any more.
Mine either. They are little kids, having fun.
Great Fun.. Like Baseball was meant to be.
Yes... Beaverton Played a great game too.
I noticed the same right away
I just can't imagine how cool this must be for these kids! Awesome!
"Whiteness" aside, there aren't many professional sports teams outside of the soccer world that are as multi-ethnic as NHL teams. On one team you could find Swedes, Finns, Canadians, Americans, Czechs, Slovaks, and Russians, all playing together. And you can even find in the league African-Americans, African-Canadians, Hispanics, Asians, Germans, Norwegians, and even British-born players.
Far more cultures play hockey than play American football (which is played mostly by Americans and a few soccer kickers from other countries), yet the NHL teams are just seen as "mostly white guys." OK.
I think that is because so many sports are competing for kids and their time and their money. Baseball and softball are very expensive sports to play. A good bat is around $200 and most kids have 2-3 or more. A good glove is $75-100, and again, many kids have more than one (catcher, 1st base, infield and/or outfield), tournament fees are $300-$450- $800 per team and then there is private instruction.
I think that kids choose a sport early and stay with it a long time. For many reasons, black kids tend to choose football and basketball as their sports and stay there because that is where their early training and love starts. They don't branch out to other sports because of time and money committments.
Apparently, black participation in baseball (professional or otherwise) has been dropping steadily in recent years.
Baseball Still Lacks Blacks in Major Leagues
