Liberals should welcome genetically modified rice and grain treated against pests and diseases. Farmers will need to spray fewer chemicals to keep plants healthy. Its a win for the environment and for a hungry's world food needs. Genetic engineering technology offers the potential for growing stronger, healthier and tastier food plants. This Luddite knee-jerk opposition to a technology that promises to reduce destruction of the environment contradicts liberals' Green goals. There is no evidence GM foods are less safe than conventionally grown foods treated with pesticides and herbicides.

It is conveniently overlooked that we've all been eating genetically engineered foods for quite some time. But in the farming language it's called hybrids and animal husbandry. The Angus beef that seems to be the rage now is from selective breeding to get a beef cow that has more meat than it's predecessor did 50 years ago. The same goes for the grain crops that produce more per acre than they did 25 years ago. In my opinion, that's exactly what genetic engineering is, selectively breeding/selectively cross pollinating to get a desired product.

The average American doesn't understand science very well, so is vulnerable to manipulation by screaming activists on the news shows.
