Price tag put on John Mark Karr investigation

Boulder County officials spent at least $29,726 in costs related to the arrest, extradition and court appearance of John Mark Karr, the former suspect in the death of JonBenet Ramsey.

The Boulder District Attorney's office said it spent $23,656 investigating Karr. That included nearly $6,000 for business class tickets to fly him and an investigator to California from Bangkok, Thailand, where Karr was arrested.

The sheriff's office said it incurred $6,070 in costs, including $3,255 for Karr's flight on a state plane from Los Angeles to Jefferson County Airport in Colorado, sheriff's officials said Friday.

Overtime wages of $2,468 and supplies of $347 also were spent following an influx of reporters at the jail after Karr's extradition, sheriff's officials said.

A final accounting of overtime costs will be completed for in early October, according to the county.

Karr was cleared last week in the 1996 murder of 6-year-old JonBenet after his DNA did not match evidence from the crime scene. Karr was still in jail Friday in Boulder awaiting extradition to California to face child porn charges in Sonoma County. Authorities have until Wednesday to transfer him.

I'd wager the cost was many times that.

So much of these "cost" things are strictly bookkeeping...(example: "The cost of the war", bla, bla, bla)

These people should strike out the salaries, which would have been paid anyway, and then give us the real EXTRA costs.

I don’t think the Thai’s want him back. They don’t need more bad press about being “The Vacation Destination” for pedophiles.

Besides I don’t recall he was charged with any crimes there unless of course being mucho creepy is illegal in Thailand – which I don’t think it is.

I think he’s already wanted here for kid porn (isn’t he?) and could also be charged with falsely confessing to a felony or giving false information to investigators. I hope he’s committed to some mental facility because he’s a very sick puppy, incompetent and a danger to children everywhere. Then again the same might be said about the Boulder DA’s office – at least the incompetent and a danger to children part since the killer is still unknown and at large.

Why does everyone keep harping on about the business class travel? The Feds routinely, every day, shuffle prisoners around from prison to prison by chartered private jets.

Here's who should pay the bill, seeing as how they got so much mileage out of the fiasco:

Greta von Suffering -- $9908.67

Larry the King -- $9908.66

Nancy dis Grace -- $9908.67

(I charged Larry a tad less because he's so pathetic.)

You forgot Rita Cosby and her trip to downtown Hamilton, AL. She was broadcsting live and the temps must have been 95 degrees with humidity almost the same.

The others were FBI and other federal agents.

Bolder Colorado officers have no more jurisdiction out side of Bolder than you do.

I agree. What this looks like is the build-up for requests to be reimbursed by some government agency.

Those are direct costs.

Indirect cost are much higher.
