Mahatma’s family walks in his footsteps (Gandhi 9/11 Peace Rally)
Ahmedabad News Online ^ | 8/31/2006 | Kamran Sulaimani

His mantra on peace and non violence still acts as a guiding principle for many across the globe. And as a way of promoting his crusade for peace, Mahatma Gandhi’s family is taking the baton of his philosophy across the world by holding rallies and conferences for terror victims and appealing for universal peace.

Bapu’s grandson Arun will lead a rally in Washington DC to highlight peace and non-violence on September 11, the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in which more than 2,700 people were killed. On the same day in Mumbai, his son Tushar will pay homage to the 200 victims of the July 11 train blasts.

Incidentally, September 11 is also the day on when Bapu, whose 137th birth anniversary will be celebrated next month, started his first non-violent campaign against racial discrimination in South Africa in 1906. His family also wants to draw attention to this peace campaign.

‘The terror attacks in America and Mumbai have shown that violence will not take us anywhere. Peace and non-violence are the only solutions. We will hold small gatherings to propogate Gandhian philosphy,’’ said Tushar, speaking to the Indian Express from Delhi.

He added, ‘‘We will be paying homage to the people who lost their lives in the Mumbai train blasts. Mahatma believed in peace and non-violence and by gathering at his statue, we will be showing solidarity with the families of those who died due to the act of terrorism or violence.’’

The day-long gathering will also witness troupes performing street plays on social issues, satyagrahs and other movements like jan andolan. The gathering will bring together peace activists, environmentalists and other civil human rights activists from across the country.

“The principles of non-violence have become more relevant in the present World,” says Tushar adding, ‘‘Be it Iraq or Lebanon, the recent terror strikes have only shown that violence is not the answer to a problem. Peace and change through peace will be the theme of our gathering at Nariman Point,’’ he said.

On the other hand, his father Arun (72), a US citizen who founded the M K Gandhi Institute for Non-Violence there, will hold a conference titled “Non-violence in the age of terrorism” preceding the September 11 rally.

The objective of the one-day conference is to help devise a curriculum on non-violence and conflict resolution that it wants to make mandatory in public schools in the United States and Canada. The rally from the historic Lincoln Memorial would mark the centenary of Mahatma’s first major public non-violent campaign.

Any chance of revoking citizenship and deporting these jerks to their beloved peaceful Indian paradise?

Gandhi, MLK, and Lennon......just a few preachers of non-violence who died of high velocity lead poisoning. Ironic.

Im guessing that they are conducting these rallys somewhere other than in the terrorist muslim countries. ???? It is interesting how our freedom becomes and open forum for every a.....hole with a cause to interject criticism on our lifestyles.

Go back to India moron. Take some of the starving children off the streets and help them, show me your peace program by what you do for those most needy in your own society.

India is a mess. They should clean up their own filthy house before whining about others.

It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.

Funny how your anti-India vitriol allows you to make the most banal generalities. Arun Gandhi is one Indian and does not represent a country of 1.1 Billion people. I am sure you know that but could not pass up on the chance to slur Indians again.

Yes, India is a mess and the country needs to get its act together.

That said, glad you are not calling for the deportation of Sikhs (another favorite target of yours) because they wear turbans! You really need to learn something about Indians before you abuse them. You have every right to do so but a little knowledge during your frequent slurs and tirades will make you look less prejudiced, a little less potty-mouthed, and a wee bit more clever.

It is funny and ironic to see how in this battle against Islamofascism, you have come out against the Indian-Americans without realizing who the fifth column is. Psst...it is the muslims.

This idiot is a mootbat leftist as was his grandfather. Gandhi, that scum of a human being, was responsible for the genocide of millions of non-Muslims during the tragic Partition riots.

And just like the original Ghandi, he knows he won't get blown up by preaching in front of civilized people. Go tell the muzzies, dude, and find out what their "peace" really means.

I am not calling for deportation of Sikhs.

I think that religious headdress should be banned in all public transportation, all public buildings. The Almighty could care less what someone wears on his or her head. These awful getups are all about political power and control.

Have it your way. If I have the time, I can pull out numerous posts where you target Sikhs (among all folks!!). You may have your reasons but that's perfectly fine.

Have a great weekend.

Thank you for posting this link. I read that Specialist Uday Singh was granted US citizenship posthumously by the President. May his soul rest in peace.

I know nothing about the Sikh religion. I know they have been targeted because of their dress.

They can wear what they please in their houses of worship. I maintain that a ban on religious headwear would have a dramatic effect on ALL the religions affected. Moderates would welcome it, extremists would move back to their hellholes

Like the Sikhs, you've got the Amish and Orthodox Jews...groups not prone to violence.

We are talking about islam, not the jews or the amish or the sikhs.

The west must defang radical islam or the amish and the jews and the sikhs will cease to exist along with the rest of us.
