Beerwah, Australia: Hundreds of surfers formed a circle in the waves off Australia‘s eastern coast and cast sprigs of wildflowers into the Pacific Ocean on Sunday to honour ‘Crocodile Hunter‘ Steve Irwin.

Australian media reported that a family service for Irwin, who was killed a week ago when a stingray barb pierced his chest as he filmed a TV show, was held on Saturday on his wildlife park at Beerwah on Queensland state’s Sunshine Coast.

Irwin’s manager John Stainton said the reports were conjecture, and the family would make a statement on Monday about the funeral.

Brisbane’s The Sunday Mail reported a private ceremony took place on Saturday; the Nine and Seven television networks showed footage of an empty marquee and chairs they reported were used in the ceremony.

Popular figure

Details of the funeral have been of interest because of Irwin’s massive popularity. His father, Bob, said the family would hold a small private ceremony with friends but that fans would have a chance to honour Irwin at a public service later.

RIP, Steve Irwin.

How sad that such a freak accident would take his life.

On TV today there was a show where Steve Irwin was filming in the waters off of Mexico and heard that some divers had been lost nearby. He stopped what he was doing and went to look for them. By some miracle he found one of the divers who was an elderly man and he saved his life. The other diver, an elderly woman, had passed away during the night. I thought that it was a wonderful thing that Steve did considering the people on the boat that the divers had gotten lost from were not even looking for them. May Steve Irwin rest in peace.

I Heard about that, and thought of how like him that was, because he was a very Kind-Hearted man. Our Lord Bless him and Comfort his Family, is my Prayer.

Our family offers prayers for his family, friends and fans. He was an amazing young man who educated and lived what he preached. He left quite a legacy to his wife and children. May he rest in peace.

Thank you Steve.... for the hours you shared with us and the lessons you taught.
