On Tuesday, the GOP primary in Rhode Island pits Sen. Lincoln Chafee against Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey. Whatever else may be said about Chafee, he has been a very reliable vote against obstructionist filibusters of judicial nominees. He's voted for cloture all 25 times (see details below the fold).
According to Rasmussen, Chafee has pulled to within two points of Democratic challenger Sheldon Whitehouse in his bid for re-election (i.e. 44% for Whitehouse and 42% for Chafee). Whitehouse previously had a six point lead. But Chafee must first face off against Laffey, on Tuesday. Rasmussen has Whitehouse leading Laffey 58% to 31%.

Here's a point of view on the Chafee/Laffey primary not often expressed. I'm not saying that I agree with it, but Chafee's record against 'Rat filibusters is reassuring.
So I'm not going to get all excited about a moral victory of getting a conservative elected in a primary in a liberal stronghold, when that victory elects a liberal Dem. I've not understood why CfG wanted to pump money into this race, I even donated myself to Laffey early on before I realized that it was a suckers bet.
I agree we can't count on Chafee for anything. And we can't count on Whitehorse for anything either. So, that is a wash at best. Laffey has ZERO chance in November.
Personally, I'd like to see Chaffee out. He only got in in the first place on his father's name (and not with my vote). I'd like to see Patches Kennedy out, too. I could never tolerate how he got in in the first place.
Someday, I'd like to move to Montana... ;-)
I didn't see Chafee coming to the rescue of the judges whom the Democrats filibustered. And he voted against Alito's confirmation, and just held up John Bolton's UN Ambassador nomination.
Well, we can count on Chafee for one thing.
He will caucus with the Republicans, giving us a Republican majority. This will make the committee chairmen Republicans instead of Democrats, and so Republican bills will come to the floor.
At that point, Chafee can vote against them if he wants. But he has given the Republicans a chance to pass their legislative program, and denied the Democrats the chance to pass theirs.
It's a tough call. But short of a candidacy by Governor Don Carcieri, it's hard to imagine a coneservative winning a Senate seat in Rhode Island. Too bad.

Everybody says Laffey can't win, but the Dem only has 44% in this poll!!!
If it is 50-50, I'm not so sure of that.
IMHO, many people in the RNC would rather lose the seat to a Democrat than have Laffey win.
Is Laffey a closet lib? Or is he just pandering to his constituents? Or both?
I'd have to agree.
The Dem only has 44% against Chaffee, whereas the Dem has nearly 60% (58% unless I read that wrong) against Laffey.
In the primary it is an anguished vote, knowing that Rhode Island will very likely elect a Democrat who will filibuster judicial nominees, as well as vote for Harry Reid (Traitor - Nv) for Majority Leader.
I don't pay much attention to polls. Remember during the last Presidential election, 2004, when Dick Morris and others on Fox()and presumbly other channels) were projecting that Bush was going to lose based on polls, and then realized that the polls were wrong? Remember the 2000 election when Florida was called for Gore before the polls even closed?
I was once polled by a group that skewed the questions toward the answer they wanted. They weren't looking for the truth. I believe that this was a "push poll".
