GETTYSBURG, Pa. - A woman admitted to smoking marijuana daily with her 13-year-old son to reward him for completing his homework. Amanda Lynn Livelsberger, 30, pleaded guilty to several charges Monday and will be sentenced Nov. 27.
Livelsberger, of Conewago Township, admitted in Adams County court that she had been smoking marijuana with her son since he was 11, and that she often gave it to him as a reward.
The boy told police that he was required to do his homework as soon as he got home from school, and then was allowed to smoke marijuana with his mother, according to court documents.
Livelsberger pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of corruption of minors, possession with intent to deliver drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of a small amount of marijuana with intent to distribute.
The plea did not stipulate a sentence.
The woman also said she also smoked marijuana with two of her son's friends, ages 17 and 18, police said. The 18-year-old also told investigators he had also bought heroin from Livelsberger.
"Except for the legality issue, this is no different from the thousands, maybe millions, of parents who give their kids Ritalin everyday so they will do their homework."
You must not know much about these drugs. Most are given in the morning, so by the time homework comes around, they are no longer working.
In my house, homework was generally motivated not so much by what mom would give us if we did it, but by what dad would give us if we didn't!
I wonder if is written assigments were even readable. Recall the anti-drug commercial where the student goes from what he thought he wrote to what he actually wrote?
The only problem with this scenario? A doctor didn't write a prescription and Big Pharm didn't get a cut.

This is a ridiculous statement. As a parent of a child who had many attention problems in school, she was given Ritalin. It helped her to focus and to retain her friends, when their parents were telling them "Stay away from her, or you'll get in trouble, too."
We had the benefit of a psychologist who saw she showed signs of depression because of her feeling "different." Thankfully we also had a school counselor in elementary school who helped her and other children realize they were able to focus by various other means, so she didn't feel she was different.
We have relatives of a child with this problem, and they did not turn to Ritalin. He went on to become an alcoholic and a criminal, and has screwed up his own son.
Please consider that others may have unselfish reasons for seeking treatment as we did.
Actually, Ritalin and other ADHD/ADD medications are used to ehance a child's focus and attention while in school. The predominate prescription used is a time-release formula which wears off by the end of the school day. Parents rarely give another dose in the evening as the effect of the med keeps them from sleeping.

Except that your larger point has nothing to do with this story. Ritalin, when properly prescribed has a positive effect on the child suffering from ADD/ADHD. When inproperly prescribed (given when the child does not have one of these disorders) can have a somewhat smaller positive effect on the child (greater focus, but not to the degree you find with a child properly diagnosed). On the other hand, allowing your child to smoke Marijuana or use other illegal drugs had no positive effect whatsoever, and can have very detrimental effects. So, your point was, again?

Incorrect. One is a reward, the other is probably a misguided attempt to make it possible to do the homework.

I guess these several posts to you describing the benefits of providing the drug to children who need it are having no effect on you. I don't believe that I will be able to offer anything other than what they have already offered, so never mind.
