Keep the Immigration Debate Civil (Schwarzenegger says "Tone down the rhetoric")
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 12, 2006 | ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER

Posted on 09/12/2006 2:01:50 PM PDT by calcowgirl

To those who believe illegal immigration is reaching a crisis level in this country I say: Tone down the rhetoric. I myself have said things that caused division even when that was not my intent. Words can be weapons. We must be careful to distinguish between legal and illegal immigration, between those who break our laws to do us harm and those who break our laws to find freedom and prosperity in the greatest nation on Earth. It is hypocritical for Congress to condemn people for coming here illegally when the federal government has been unwilling to do what it takes to stop them from coming in the first place.

Now that they are here, what do we do? . . . Amnesty only made it worse. You don't reward people for breaking the law. And you don't grant someone the rights of citizenship simply by virtue of how long they have been in this country illegally — that makes a mockery of the law and penalizes those who waited years and followed the rules.

But it is not realistic either to round up 12 million people and send them home. . . . Some say it would cost as much as $250 billion to even try. Who would pay for that? It is simply not realistic.

The answer . . . is, first, to secure the border to stop the problem from getting worse. Second, we must create a temporary-worker program so people can come here legally to work. We should also lift the cap on work visas for industries such as technology, engineering and agriculture so immigrants can be hired when there are not enough U.S. workers. And we must create a path to legal status for those living in the shadows illegally. ...

The first part of this op-ed offers advice to immigrant rights activists to change their message, carry the American flag, etc.

I guess he didn't mean this:
"Some say it would cost as much as $250 billion to even try."

This is just a smart shift of tactics.

With more illegals coming over the border all the time and no rise in deportations,
little enforcement of sanctions against employers of illegals,
along with more anchor babies...it's just a numbers game that they'll
win if they simply bid their time.

It will all end with a whimper. Not a bang.
And the invaders will win.

This will be fun to watch as Arnold talks himself right out of his job...and everyone who voted for him runs for cover.

Watch as everyone in California has the Dr. Frankenstein reaction of: "Good Lord! He moved!"

Just repeating the Bush tricks. Pretend to secure the border, no workplace performance, and convert illegals to legal with work programs.

Bush wants to create an America that is economically stratified like Latin America. Bush should be kept in check in this bad pursuit of his.

Won't Karl Rove get a fat consultancy fee payoff in 2009 from the cheaper labor lobbies for managing Bush to defund enformcement and support radical new amnesties and worker programs? That's a win...

Ummmm no Arnie we don't have to do any of those. The politicians want that NOT the American people.

My advice.....stick your message where the sun don't shine.

Does "civil" mean "capitulate to La Raza" in German?

He saved the best for last:

They must pay a fine for breaking our laws.
They must learn English and become part of our culture.
They must pay back taxes and pay for healthcare and education rather than expect American taxpayers to pay extra when some cannot even afford healthcare or college for their own children.

I would like to take a moment to urge my fellow forum participants to please accept the hand-over of the United States to Mexico. The retoric has been over the top recently, and for what? Geez, come on folks, be nice to the new tenents. Arnold's right here. Be nice.

When possible please landscape, repaint and have your home cleaned before turning it over to the families that will be living there next.

Look, you can get upset about it or learn that change is wonderful. I know you aren't getting your pay under the table, so you have to pay taxes. I realize you don't get free healthcare. I realize you had to take your kids out of the public school system so there would be a warm loving atmosphere for those trying to learn english and dominate the playground. I know you have to buy car insurance and they don't. I realize you don't get food stamps, housing subsidies and a whole lot more.

You can choose to be bitter about this or you can actually learn to celebrate the wonders of diversity. You know, when you think about it, diversity is great as long as it's whites who are losing influence in today's U.S. and ultimately it's future.

Don't let it bother you that within thirty to forty years you will no longer have self-determination in this nation if you're white, and please realize that those who do, will be voting in two nations until they are joined.

Gosh, I know the meds and beer are paying off for me. I'm nowhere as upset about this as I used to be, and now I understand why others are were so happy about all this long before I was.

You'd have to be on mind altering items to love this deal.

Then why does California have its own state-funded SSI/SSP program for any aged, blind, or disabled illegal immigrant that can drag themselves across the border into California?

I'm all for Arnold's reelection and he's saying the right stuff, but I have to ask how will they pay fines and repay health costs on their "under the table" wages and who's going to see that they do?

No. No path to citizenship for any illegal immigrant lawbreaker. They have shown contempt for this country.

They can work here for slave wages as far as I'm concerned, but NO benefits that are not reimbursed by the pockets of their home country.

Well as his last paragraph says,

Unfortunately, we must wait for Congress to return next year
to take up the critical issue of comprehensive immigration reform.
