Massive "Red Friday" public rally, Ottawa, Canada. Friday Sept 22, 2006...Let's roll!
CFRA News ^ | September 14, 2006 | CFRA Staff

Posted on 09/14/2006 7:28:31 AM PDT by fanfan

News Talk Radio 580 CFRA is proud to support the grassroots effort brought to Petawawa by the wives of two men serving in the Canadian Forces. The concept of wearing something red - whether a red shirt, jacket, cap, bandana or whatever - every Friday is meant to let the soldiers and their spouses and children know they are not alone.

We appreciate the sacrifices they are making on our behalf. We thank them for their service to our country and their fight for peace and justice wherever in the world they are sent.

With that in mind, CFRA invites you to attend a massive "Red Friday" public rally. This is a non-partisan, non-political rally in support of Canadian troops and their families:

* Friday Sept 22, 2006
* Parliament Hill, Ottawa
* 12:00 Noon - 1:00 pm

Police officers, firefighters, city staff, politicians of all stripes, OC Transpo staff, paramedics, united way workers, private businesspeople and the general public will join a colourful parade of veterans as they show respect and thanks in a very public way.

PLEASE SHARE THIS PAGE WITH EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST. HELP SPREAD THE WORD, AND WEAR RED THIS FRIDAY!

The wear red on Fridays campaign actually started in the States somewhere. I've been doing it since May sometime.

I'm glad you found out about it.

:-)

That is a very nice gesture. I am an American Soldier and have worked with Canadian forces in the past. The Armed Forces of Canada are great professional Soldiers and do their country proud.

Any idea how or why the color red was selected?
Personally, I've made a point for years of omitting it entirely from my wardrobe, etc.

I actually heard about it some years ago. But it doesn't always stay present in my mind. It helps that red is "big" this fall.

Well... the flag is red and white, the mounties wear red...

That red is not to be confused with the red associated with the "Light Beer Communists".. aka the Liberals...

An announcement was made on FD the other day regarding this. I wish I could be there.

I'm not sure.

Maybe an American FReeper knows how it started.

I googled and found this.

Wear Red on Fridays-Grass Roots Movement!
bullet Summary of the eRumor
An email that urges Americans to wear Red on Fridays as a display of support for U.S. troops fighting overseas.

bullet The Truth
We've not been able to trace where or how this started or how widespread it is.

It is common for someone to get an idea like this and send it to as many people as possible, hoping that it will become a national trend.

Most of these grass-roots efforts don't go anywhere, but because of the incredible interconnectivity of people through the Internet, it can happen.

Shortly after the Attack on America on September 11, 2001, a grass-roots email got started that urged Americans to take a solemn moment to join together in remembering those who lost their lives and to unite in a stand against terrorism.
The email said that on the Friday after 9/11, people should all light a candle at 7:00pm and stand in front of their homes, businesses, or even next to their cars if they had been driving.
Multiplied millions of people did so and media from coast to coast carried stories about folks lining up along streets in neighborhoods and cities and joining together in grief, anger, and a show of support for fighting the terrorists.

Updated on 7/8/05
A real example of the eRumor as it has appeared on the Internet:

RED FRIDAY

You will soon see a lot of people wearing Red on Fridays. Here's why.....
The Americans, who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not
"organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are. Many
Americans, like yourself, and all their friends, simply want to recognize
that Americans support our troops.

Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is starting
Friday and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that
every red -blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR
SOMETHING RED. Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's see if we can make the
United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football
game at a University.

If every one of our memberships share this with other acquaintances, fellow
workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee ! that it will not be long
before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are
many people thinking! of their well-being. You will feel better all day
Friday when you wear Red! So let's get the word out and lead by example;

wear RED on Fridays.

I sent this out to everyone on my email list;

hopefully, you will too.

Wear Red on Fridays ..

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE.
FOR US, THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED!! GOD BLESS AMERICA

Hi!

I was just on the "AIRBORNE OFFICER: "WHEN WE'RE IN IRAQ, WE KNOW YOU'RE HERE." Walter Reed FReep # 73, Sept. 8 '06" thread.

Great work!

Any advice for Canada's support the troop rally would be appreciated. (Can I make a MOABs in a week?)
Thanks in advance!

Fan.

I wonder how their union bosses will react...I know that unions like CUPE are strongly against the troops and want them pulled...

I really don't care what they try to do.

People have their heart in this one, I think.

Are you coming?

Don't have anything red though.

I'm happy to hear you're coming Eds.

Call CFRA, they are giving away red T shirts today, or grab a T-shirt at Walmart or Zellers.

What area are the Free Dominion folks meeting at?

Good luck, and try to post some pics.

I'll be heading south to the FReeper party in DC.

One of these days, I'll drive north to see some of my Frozen Freeper Friends.
