The Senator's Gentile Rebuke (Sen. Allen Angry at Reporter's Question about Jewish Ancestry)
Washington Post ^ | 9/19/06 | Dana Milbank

First came Sen. George Allen's Macaca Moment. Then we learned of challenger Jim Webb's thoughts on the "horny" women of the Naval Academy.

Now, just when you thought Virginia's U.S. Senate race couldn't get any weirder, the Jews of Tunis are making a cameo.

At a debate in Tysons Corner yesterday between Republican Allen and Democrat Webb, WUSA-TV's Peggy Fox asked Allen, the tobacco-chewing, cowboy-boot-wearing son of a pro football coach, if his Tunisian-born mother has Jewish blood.

"It has been reported," said Fox, that "your grandfather Felix, whom you were given your middle name for, was Jewish. Could you please tell us whether your forebears include Jews and, if so, at which point Jewish identity might have ended?"

Allen recoiled as if he had been struck. His supporters in the audience booed and hissed. "To be getting into what religion my mother is, I don't think is relevant," Allen said, furiously. "Why is that relevant -- my religion, Jim's religion or the religious beliefs of anyone out there?"

"Honesty, that's all," questioner Fox answered, looking a bit frightened.

"Oh, that's just all? That's just all," the senator mocked, pressing his attack. He directed Fox to "ask questions about issues that really matter to people here in Virginia" and refrain from "making aspersions."

"Let's move on," proposed the moderator, George Stephanopoulos of ABC News.

Yes, let's -- but not before we figure out what that was all about. Turns out the Forward, a Jewish newspaper, reported that the senator's mother, Etty, "comes from the august Sephardic Jewish Lumbroso family."

No, there's a Ku Klux Klan history in Southside and Webb is planning on their vote, the KKK and Islamofascism being, as it were, "blood brothers".

He saw how that worked for Governors Warner and Kaine ~

I think you are right. You may recall that when the "macaca" story came out, there was an interview with the Webb staffer who was the subject of the comment. He made some ridiculous statement that he felt Senator Allen was trying to "incite the crowd" or something like that, by referring to his ethnicity. Someone (NRO, maybe) had a good commentary on it. All I recall is that it was a woman writer.

It seemed to be the opinion of this Webb staffer that all Senator Allen had to do was say, "Look, an immigrant! He's not white!" and the crowd would turn as one and attack. It was particularly hypocritical since in other stories, the Webb staffer made a big deal about how he had family in the area, and he stayed with someone there the previous night. His attitude seemed to be a real both sides of the fence one: I'm actually a local, so the Republicans are stupid and narrow minded-- these are my friends and neighbors, too, but they are red neck hate mongering ones.

Someone on FR had either a tagline or posted a comment that I just loved. It was to the effect that everything liberals "know" about conservatives, they learned from watching Archie Bunker.

Only after serving as VP probably to Guiliani. He certainly has not helped his chances of late to be even that and I am a former support for a Presidential run. But now see that he is not ready for the big time and won't be until he can handle the Treason Media.

Funny, confderate history month didn't hurt him with african americans in virginia. He gets the highest vote % of any republican in the state for african americans. He has more the double the approval rating(among blacks) (35-40%) of any other republican including that rino warner. When elections have rolled around he usually gets 20-25% of the black vote.

But if two Senators run...then by default, a Senator HAS to win. (Allen vs. Hitlery)

I haven't really cared that much for Sen Allen until I saw that exchange last night on Hume's show.

You should check out his response to this -- it will explain to you clearly why he was indignant, and why he responded the way he did.

The reporter had just called his mother a racist, before the reporter asked THIS question.

The way she asked the question cast aspersions. She asked him when he stopped being jewish.

You should watch the video of the Webb aide. Allen didn't lose his cool. He was pointing him out so he could comment that Webb wasn't able to tour SW VA because Webb was in california meeting with the hollywood liberals.

So Webb had to send someone to film him.

Allen screwed up because Allen did NOT do his homework, his staff did not do their homework, so Allen realised he didn't know the kid's name, and he "made one up" (actually, I believe his campaign had been calling the kid names, and Allen just used one. A major blunder, but not an attack on the guy).

They are liberals. That's what THEY would do, so they assume that's what WE would do.

The leftists are all arguing that Allen was "ashamed" of his jewish heritage.

And that his supporters were not BOOING the reporter, but were booing the possibility that Allen was part jewish.

They really think we are all lilly-white skinheads who hate both blacks AND jews.

The "newsie" at the Post suggested he lost his temper ~ those people lie about the time of day, so whatever the "newsie" said is not operative.

Your servile acceptance of Post propaganda is disgusting.

The fellow who did the shootings the other day in Montreal also had a very unusual haircut exactly like that Webb staffer. He was also of East Indian origin.

Might be George Allen was right to be fearful of the guy's presence. Worth checking out ~ see if this guy has some sort of association with any Indian terrorist groups.

Might even find out why Webb is involved with them.

Imagine a black candidate being asked if it was true that he was his grandmother was an octaroon.

Actually, it was more like if a white candidate was asked if his grandmother was an octaroon, and then asked when did his family start passing for white- passing seen as a self-hating, cowardly act. Allen was not angry at being called Jewish, he was angry that his mother's choice to conceal her full ethnic heritage would be brought to light and that her name would be dragged through the mud.

I don't know why Allen's mother hid her Jewish ethnicity from her own children, but it is (or should be) irrelevant to her son's campaign. The question was unprofessional and disgusting, IMO.

Cohan is Irish.

That's funny. Thought Cohan, Cohen, whatever, was a Jewish name. It is the name for the priests... Maybe they're just similar sounding names.
