Bill Nelson unveils new Florida Senatorial Elections Commercials
Florida Senator Bill Nelson, seeking reelection against Congresswoman Katherine Harris, unveiled his new TV commercials this morning. In doing so, he has set his initial tone for his campaign.
Nelsons :30 spot was very soft. Tone was not combative at all. Message was I get things done for all Floridians.
He specifically says that he does not see his job as one where he is supposed to be combative, but rather to work, along with Republicans and Democrats, for everyone in Florida.
Yada yada yada.
Ad scrolls many newspaper headlines saying what Nelson has accomplished.
In critique, only two bad points of spot. One was thematic, Nelson was on too much, not enough happy people video. Other problem was newspaper headlines were shown in reversed imagery, white ink on black paper:" so there is a natural tendency to think the stories are negative too. Too many headlines, with no time to read them.
A Mr. Nice Guy, Im on your side spot. Very soft. No mention of issues at all.
No mention of KH. Initial theme will be Im Mr. Nice Guy; she is a bomb-thrower. Im your friend. Dont worry about issues. Ill take care of that.
Of course, this plays well with the Seniors Citizens and the non-political Great Unwashed.
Would rate commercial a B or B- on effectiveness.
Nelson's biggest problem is to make sure he doesn't make a mistake. Don't say or do something stupid.
Exactly. Smile, kiss babies, eat fried chicken with every Baptist congregation you can. Tell 'em you love God, America and them.
... and then walk away.
Going for the classic strategy. First off, he is ahead in the polls so he will keep the soft, "I'm effective" tone. Should he sink in the polls, or start trailing, his campaign will rough up Harris in ads. He'll continue to try and smack her around until about a week or so before election day (assuming polling is returning favorable to him) and then he'll go back to the sweet, I'm effective ads.
So, in a strange way, let's hope he comes under compulsion of the polls and is forced to attack Harris.
*ping*
I agree.
I saw a Bill Nelson commercial this morning. It has a lot of fine print zooming in and moving across a video of him. I thought it was difficult to read and many of Florida's residents don't see that well. Very poorly made IMO.
I think he's counting on Harris to do that.
yep, think it would help Katherine to advertise specifics of Nelson's left of Schumer voting record along side his own ad saying he's such a team player...NOT.
please add me to your ping list. Thanks!
I don't beleive that Congresswoman Harris has run any TV spots yet. She needs to get her message out, and TV ads are an efective way to do it. Her campaign has spent over $6 million so far, but on what I have no idea.
You are right, but average voter, given a chance to decide which is more important, Michael Moore or their social security, will sell out every time.
You're right, you're never going to reach those. I'm talking about the RED state voters of Florida. The President, in the 2004 elections, won the state by over 325 thousand votes. The center-right coaliton is a winning coalition, and we must give the contrast that the Moore picture presents to our center-right voters, many of whom have no idea that Nelson is more than a closet Moore supporter.
