" Help to the doomed Jews of Europe? Such as the passengers aboard the St Louis?"

Funny how they "forget" about that! But "liberal" "social justice" is far more "important!" I learned during my visit to Israel 20 years ago, when we were touring Yad Va Shem, that FDR and Co knew about the death camps and refused to bomb the tracks leading to them, even after many pleadings. Yet other targets already being hit in 1944 were not too far away.

Did they tell you the reason? Artificial rubber factory in Auschwitz concentration camp belonged to Standard Oil.

it seems that the pleadings not to bomb were louder than the pleadings to bomb.

The Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler's Germany, 1941-1945 by Michael R. Beschloss reveals confidential conversations which show the extent of FDR's indifference toward the Holocaust, hostility toward Germany, and his anti-Semitism and anti-Catholic attitudes. I've not read the book (just read around in it), so I'm not clear about how much Truman shared those views, but do remember the flap a few years ago about some material that emerged from Truman's presidential or personal papers.
