ATLANTA A former National Guard soldier is accused of bringing machine guns from Iraq to the United States and trying to sell them to a northwest Georgia gun dealer.
Robert James Clymore of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was arraigned in federal court today on charges of unlawful importation, possession, transportation and transfer of machine guns. U-S Attorney David Nahmias said Clymore obtained the guns while on active duty with his Army National Guard unit in Iraq.
Attempts to reach Martin Lively, Clymore's attorney, by telephone were unsuccessful.
According to the indictment, Clymore smuggled four foreign-made machines guns back to the U-S in his gear when his tour of duty ended. In December, Clymore brought the firearms to a gun dealer in Taylorsville, about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta, and negotiated a deal to trade the guns for an all-terrain vehicle and a pistol.
The gun dealer alerted the FBI, who seized the weapons when Clymore returned the following day to complete the trade, the indictment alleges.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and a fine of up to one-point-25 (m) million dollars.
Might need something like that when the Hizzies coming in as OTMs start attacking!
If you had a machine gun, why would you ever sell it?
This happened a lot in the days of yesteryear. Mucho many aks came home in tape decks. Or so I've been told.
Stupid is as stupid does.
My money is on this guy being a Sergeant, E6 or E7.
Sounds like something my old suppply sergeant would try.
I hear Kansas is very cold in the winter. This joker better start getting used to it.
Because you have the number you're trying to sell - plus 2
doesn't sound like a Staff NCO to me...more like someone who just ended their first and only enlistment....
That ammo gets expensive after a while....even if you're rolling your own!
I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and thought I knew what winter was...then I went to Ft. Riley for three years. Cold enough to freeze the d!ck off an eskimo.
Too bad his cell in Leavenworth is going to be heated. Cut off the heat, give him a GI blanket and tell him to rough it.
Yeah. It is a shame he can't own what the average Iraqi can, despite the real purpose of the second amendment. Repeal the NFA of '34 and all the infringements since.
If you're right, it would be because of that whole "New Army!" thing. Soon as I saw the "traded", it just screamed "E7!"
You just do not think through the ramifications of that sort of juvenile enthusiasm, hopefully time will bring a bit of wisdom. Unfortunately for this guy, he acted it all out and is finding out the penalty for his foolishness.
Someone who served should have all the toys he wants.
former National Guard soldier He's not active duty.
He'll be doing time in SOME Federal Prison, though.
Sounds good to me. Make him pay an import tax on each rifle and tell him to fill out the paperwork in advance next time.
You're right, I somehow missed the "former" part when I was reading it.
